Since 1968, Build Up Justice NYC (formerly Brooklyn Legal Services Corporation A) has provided free legal services for low-income residents of Brooklyn, pursuing neighborhood-based mission of justice, empowerment, and community development. For over half a century, we have utilized an array of legal and advocacy strategiescommunity organizing, affirmative civil rights litigation, and eviction defense to defend the rights of individuals and families. Collaboration with the city, state, and federal officials to enforce housing laws and develop legislative solutions is also an integral part of our strategy. Build Up Justice NYC has three core programsPreserving Affordable Housing (PAH) Program, Consumer & Economic Advocacy (CEA) Program, and Community & Economic Development (CED) Programeach of which has unique initiatives and plays a vital community role to ensure basic needs are met and fundamental rights affirmed.

The Opportunity :

Build Up Justice NYC is looking for its next Chief Financial Officer who will be

responsible for developing, managing and evaluating all financial operations to advance the mission of Build Up Justice NYC. As a member of the senior leadership team, the CFO is responsible for managing a $25+M budget with a diverse public and private funding base. They will partner with the Executive Director to strategically manage financial risks in all aspects of governance, policy work and operations, and provide financial expertise in the development and management of the organization. The CFO must be a proven leader, financial and strategic business partner with the ability to manage and develop a finance team. They will have demonstrated ability to recommend and implement financial policies, oversee and manage all budgets, accounts, payroll, accounting, grants management and other financial matters. This position will supervise the finance team.

The Chief Financial Officer will :

• Develop and implement cash management policies with special emphasis on the working capital fund and a reserve fund;
• Develop accounting reporting policies relative to the fundraising activities and initiatives;
• Oversee preparation of and submission of all grant and government contract project budgets, financial grant reports, and reimbursement requests;
• Review all receipts and disbursements, ascertain correct account distribution and ensure all support documentation is accurate and in order;
• Coordinate the preparation of the organizational budget for annual and strategic planning processes and for contracts and reporting;
• Monitor and analyze actual financial performance with specific emphasis on cash flow, project expenses and restricted funds;
• Develop, negotiate and maintain business and financial relationships with banks, funders and auditors;
• Ensure state charitable solicitation filings, state sales tax and / or sales tax-exempt filings, Better Business Bureau and National Charities Information Bureau filings, IRS information returns, and IRS unrelated business income tax returns, real property tax exemption renewal filings, and storefront registration filings are completed and filed in a timely and accurate basis; and
• Make recommendations to the Finance Committee and / or Board of Directors to improve the overall health of the organization.

To be successful in this role, you must have a minimum of BS in Accounting, Business or related field; CPA preferred; and a minimum of 10 years of progressive accounting experience, non-profit experience a plus.
