Civilian Assistance Unit (CAU)
The Unit will aid those who reportedly experienced trauma following a police encounter, with specific assistance provided for those who have reported sexual assault or other types of serious police misconduct during the investigation and trial processes. Civilians will be provided advocacy and support to assist them navigating through the complex legal system which may be encountered following filing a complaint. Civilian Assistance Unit will use trauma-informed and victim-centered approach to provide ongoing support to civilians (victims / witnesses of police misconduct) with various social issues they might experience.
This is a full time Therapist position in the Civilian Assistance Unit (CAU). The position requires a trauma informed / trained practitioner to trauma focused / specialized clinical services, including individual, family and group psychotherapy, to primary and secondary victims of police misconduct. The Therapist will also provide information, referrals, assistance with victim compensation applications as well as support, advocacy and accompaniment to victims. This therapist will function as a member of both the team and the staff, sharing in the mission of not only providing specialized services but also working towards systemic change.
Tasks and Responsibilities :
Minimum Qualifying Requirements
Master's Degree in Social Work (MSW). New York State License as a Licensed Masters Social Worker (LMSW), a minimum of two years of experience working with survivors of trauma, such as crime or abuse. Professional Liability Insurance is needed before hire.
Preferred Qual and Skills : Must be licensed and / or working towards licensure for LCSW ; self-starter with strong clinical skills with both individuals and groups. Foreign language proficiency a plus.
