Position Summary
The Radiology Technician is responsible for providing radiological support and performing direct patient care activities in the Operating Room (OR) under the direct supervision of a physician. This role includes monitoring and maintaining radiological equipment, ensuring safety protocols are followed, and assisting with patient positioning and care during procedures. The Radiology Technician must be familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures as outlined by the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) and other governing bodies. This position requires the ability to work with a degree of creativity, judgment, and independence.
Essential Functions
- Perform radiological duties according to the specific requirements of each surgical procedure.
- Assemble necessary supplies and positioning aids for scheduled procedures according to physician preference cards, ensuring radiology availability and coordination with the supervisor.
- With the assistance of the Operating Room RN transport patients and charts to the operating room as needed to prepare for procedures.
- Test and monitor radiological equipment for proper functioning prior to the start of cases.
- Accurately comprehend and interpret verbal orders and directions from the surgical team.
- Accurately record patient’s images in the medical record by adhering to approved policies and procedures.
- Maintain the safety of all radiology equipment, reporting hazardous conditions to the area supervisor and coordinating repairs with manufacturers as necessary.
- Ensure that all individuals in the operating room are properly shielded before activating x-rays and using PPE.
- Ensure that all individuals in the operating room wear their radiology dosimetry badges and all are returned to the designated areas within the facility at the end of the day.
- Maintain awareness during procedures to anticipate radiology needs and announce exposure times appropriately.
- Assist patients in transferring to the operating room bed and position them safely for procedures while maintaining their privacy.
- Hook up and operate equipment safely and troubleshoot any malfunctions promptly.
- Communicate patient status and relevant information to other members of the healthcare team.
- Apply prescribed procedures competently, following principles of aseptic technique throughout the procedure.
- Remain available during procedures to provide timely responses to the needs of physicians and patients.
- Assist in the Operating Room turnover to facilitate a streamlined workflow.
- Ensure the protection of minors, pregnant patients, and employees from radiation exposure.
Other Related Functions
Coordinate with the OR Supervisor to maintain and calibrate instruments, supplies, and equipment, adhering to cleaning and storage protocols.Daily care for and clean lead aprons and thyroid shields, maintaining them in good condition.Maintain professional competence by participating in continuing education and other learning experiences.Share knowledge gained from continuing education with staff and participate in the orientation and training of new personnel.Adhere to facility policies and procedures, support the facility’s vision and mission, and participate in facility committees and activities as required.Education / Training
High School Diploma or GED requiredAssociate or bachelor’s degree preferred.Licensure / Certification
Radiology Technician certification required.Basic Life Support BLSExperience
Minimum of three (3) plus years of Radiology Technician experience.Computer Literacy : Microsoft products, i.e. Outlook, Excel and Word, desirable.Minimum of 2+ years of experience in an Ambulatory Surgery Center or Outpatient setting preferred.
