Revenue Senior Agent (Open)

Under limited supervision, works on the most difficult / unique tax compliance matters and advises staff on these matters; leads the activities of journey level tax compliance employees including assigning, delegating, reviewing, or authorizing various work outputs; acts as supervisor in the absence of the supervisor; performs related work as assigned.

Job duties include :

  • Lead and manage the work activities of assigned revenue agents (Includes planning, assigning, delegating, reviewing, and authorizing various work outputs). May include supervision of the work unit in the absence of the Revenue Agent Supervisor.
  • Responsible for the preparation and filing of legal documents, such as, state tax liens, notify of assets, notices of levy, writs of seizure, estate claims, and payment agreements.
  • Training of revenue agents.
  • Preparing and compiling management reports, which include work activity reports.
  • Responsible for working and / or supervising complex tax situations.
  • Review of internal operating procedures and forms and recommending necessary improvements or corrections.
  • Communication with local, county, state and federal officials.
  • May act as a revenue officer for the purposes of serving legal documents.
  • Provide direction and expertise in the development and enhancement of automated collection systems.
  • Develop creative processes for accomplishing all aspects of collection work in a more efficient manner.
  • Provide direction in working difficult collection accounts. Researches potential sources for collection.
  • Answers simple to complex taxpayer and taxpayer representative questions regarding Nebraska tax program regulations, rulings, statutes, forms, and processing procedures as well as simple or complex questions regarding a taxpayer's specific tax returns, account, refund, tax liability, or licensing applications. Answers are provided by phone, email, letter, and personal contact. Answers are either given from the agent's extensive knowledge of the tax program or may require extensive research of the Department's records of the taxpayer's accounts / returns or interviews with taxpayers or their representatives.
  • Assists and educates taxpayers in the preparation (electronically and by paper) of tax returns and payment of taxes by phone, email and personal contact.

Requirements / Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications : Associate's Degree in business plus two years of experience with tax return preparation, business ownership and operation, account research and analysis, or interpretation and application of policies, laws, rules, or regulations OR three years of increasingly responsible experience with tax return preparation, business ownership and operation, account research and analysis, or interpretation and application of policies, laws, rules, or regulations.

Knowledge of : Business accounting and internal operating procedures and processes; Department collection procedures; Nebraska tax laws, policies, rules and regulations; legal processes involved in tax collection; automated collection systems; and basic IT functions.

Skills In : presenting information to groups or individuals, and organizing and prioritizing personal work assignments; training or acting as a work leader.

Ability to : Negotiate and secure the state's interest; effectively communicate orally and in writing at many levels; handle difficult and complex tax matters; Identify operating problems, develop appropriate solutions; prioritize and delegate work assignments; make sound and impartial decisions; think creatively in areas of automation and increased efficiencies.
