The Emergency Room Registered Nurse (ER RN) provides professional nursing care to acutely ill and injured patients across the lifespan. This role utilizes clinical judgment, critical thinking, prioritization, and time management to address the urgent needs of patients in a fast-paced emergency setting. The RN follows the nursing process, hospital protocols, and the standards set by the Iowa State Board of Nursing to ensure patient safety and quality of care.
Responsibilities
Plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care for emergency patients of all ages.
Perform triage to assess and prioritize patient care needs.
Conduct age-appropriate assessments and deliver safe, evidence-based interventions.
Collaborate with healthcare team members and external agencies to coordinate effective patient care.
Monitor vital signs, recognize cardiac arrhythmias, and intervene per ACLS and PALS protocols.
Respond promptly and calmly to emergent situations, including codes and traumas.
Document nursing assessments, interventions, and outcomes clearly using medical terminology and within electronic health records.
Administer medications and perform treatments in accordance with hospital policy and best practices.
Educate patients and families regarding treatment plans, medications, and discharge instructions.
Comply with informed consent protocols, transfer guidelines, and patient rights legislation.
Maintain proper care of department equipment and inventory of medical supplies.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives and professional development activities.
Perform other duties as assigned by leadership.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Proficient in recognizing and responding to cardiac arrhythmias, emergent symptoms, and trauma cases.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills; able to work effectively with patients, families, and team members.
Skilled in prioritizing care in a high-stress, fast-moving environment.
Knowledge of medication administration, IV therapy, and emergency procedures.
Competent in documenting using electronic medical records (EMR).
Able to calculate medication dosages and IV fluid rates accurately.
Maintains professionalism and composure during crises and complex patient situations.
Education
Minimum of an associate’s degree in nursing (ASN) from an accredited nursing program.
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
Experience
Emergency nursing experience preferred.
Six to twelve months of experience in Medical / Surgical or Critical Care nursing helpful.
