Associate Multimedia Producer

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

The Knight First Amendment Institute defends the freedoms of speech and the press in the digital age through strategic litigation, research, and public education. Our aim is to promote a system of free expression that is open and inclusive, that broadens and elevates public discourse, and that fosters creativity, accountability, and effective self-government.

Since its establishment in 2016, the Institute has filed precedent-setting litigation, undertaken major interdisciplinary research initiatives, and become an influential voice in debates about the freedoms of speech and the press in the digital age. Its active litigation docket includes cutting-edge cases relating to transparency, surveillance, and social media. Through its research program, the Institute has published a series of influential essays focused on emerging threats to the system of free expression. It has also hosted public events on new technology and public discourse, data journalism and the law, the First Amendment and inequality, whistleblowers, leaks, and national-security journalism.

The Institute seeks an experienced, dynamic Associate Multimedia Producer to work with the Communications Team to create video, audio, visual, and other online content in support of the Institute's programs and mission to defend free speech in the digital age, and to expand the Institute's overall multimedia and visual strategy online and in print. The Associate Multimedia Producer reports to the Deputy Director of Communications and Digital Strategy and Communications Director. This is a two-year, grant funded role with a possibility of extension if additional funds are secured.

Responsibilities

Work with the Deputy Director of Communications and Digital Strategy to :

• Develop and produce compelling video content (documentaries, interviews, explainers, animations, gifs) for the Institute's website, social media, public events, the press, and other promotions, assisting with, managing, or leading all phases of pre-production, production, post-production, and dissemination.
• Develop and produce the Institute's award-winning podcast, developing content in partnership with the Deputy Director of Communications, assisting with, managing, or leading all phases of pre-production, production, and post-production, and working with outside partners and vendors for production and dissemination.
• Provide multimedia support for the Institute's public programs and events and create multimedia assets for, and produce post-event multimedia content from, these events.
• Liaise with and manage production contractors and outside visual artists, photographers, videographers and producers
• With the Communications Director, oversee and manage the Institute's website, including creating and developing web-based assets that further the Institute's litigation, research, policy, and public education goals, liaising with contributing artists and help to art-direct the site, maintain site functionality and optimize user experience.
• Cultivate partnerships with other advocacy groups and visual associations and producers; cultivate and manage relationships with the Institute's partners in the Columbia University community, including the university's communications team.
• Establish, maintain, and analyze key metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of multi-media initiatives in achieving targeted communications and programmatic goals.
• Perform related duties and responsibilities as requested.

Minimum Qualifications

• B.A. and a minimum of 4-6 years of experience.
• Broad experience developing, directing, and producing varied multimedia content.
• Significant experience producing videos, documentaries, and audio-only content.
• Experience managing and directing video production crews.
• Exceptional interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
• Strong project management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree in a relevant field.
• Experience working with media, legal, and / or advocacy organizations.
• Significant experience with video production, podcasting, and graphic design.
• Experience with complex video and audio editing software, graphic design and production tools, and technology, including Adobe Creative Suite.
• Experience with Notion or similar project management tools
• Backend facility with Drupal or other open-source content management system.
• Commitment to stay current in a rapidly changing field.
• Significant knowledge of issues relating to the freedoms of speech and the press.
• Understanding of or interest in the impact of new technologies on freedom of expression.
