Position Purpose / Summary

  • Please note that this is a Civil Service position. This position is not currently open, should there become an opening we will hire off of the list of applicants starting with the oldest application date. APPLICATION FOR CITY OF SPRINGFIELD LABOR SERVICE Applicants must be at least 16 years of age at the time of filing application. Incomplete applications will not be processed. The name of an applicant will remain on the Labor Service register for the job title which he or she is registered for a period of not more than 5 years from the date of registration, subject to a renewal of registration as provided in Section 28, Chapter 31 of the General Laws, and subject to compliance with other applicable provisions of the Civil Service law and rules. Responsible for performing maintenance of all parks property. Supervision received may vary from close to moderately close depending upon the experience of the incumbent and the degree of variance from routine. No supervision is ordinarily exercised over other employees.

Essential Functions

  • Maintains park property by mowing, weeding, and trimming grass.
  • Removes garbage.
  • Cleans bathrooms.
  • Trims vegetation.
  • Shovels snow, breaks ice, spreads sand, sets out and maintains sand and salt boxes, and performs similar tasks in connection with snow removal operations.
  • Rakes leaves and seeds, fertilizes, weeds, and mows grass. Shovels, rakes, and grades loam. Trims trees and brush; picks up paper, trash and debris; cleans ponds.
  • Loads and unloads material, equipment and supplies.
  • Works with pick and shovel. Lifts and places materials. Redirects traffic, cleans up debris, places barricades and lanterns, and performs similar tasks in assisting more skilled workers on constructions, maintenance and repair projects.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Some knowledge of the use of tools, equipment and materials commonly employed in municipal construction and maintenance work.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral instructions.
  • Ability to perform manual laboring tasks for extended periods, frequently under adverse weather conditions.
  • Education and Experience

    High school diploma or equivalent.
