A K-12 school counselor's job description includes providing academic, career, and social-emotional support to students through individual and group counseling, classroom lessons, and crisis intervention. They collaborate with teachers, parents, and administrators to help students achieve their goals, plan for the future, and navigate personal and academic challenges. The role also involves program management, data analysis, and adherence to ethical and professional standards. A State of Iowa BOEE licensure is required.
Core responsibilities
Student support :
Provide individual and group counseling to address emotional, social, academic, and behavioral challenges.
Academic and career guidance :
Help students with academic planning, study skills, career exploration, post-graduation options, and transitions to the next level of school.
Assessment and interpretation :
Administer and interpret assessments (like aptitude or interest tests) to help students understand their strengths and areas for growth.
Collaboration :
Work closely with teachers, parents, administrators, and outside agencies to create a unified support system for students.
Crisis intervention :
Participate in crisis response, provide intervention during emergencies, and assist in developing school safety and crisis plans.
Program development :
Design, implement, and assess a comprehensive school counseling program that includes guidance curriculum, career fairs, and other student-focused activities.
Record keeping and reporting :
Maintain confidential student records and prepare reports on program effectiveness and student progress.
Referrals :
Identify students with special needs or other challenges and make appropriate referrals to school resources or community agencies
