Supervising Building Inspector
The Community Development Department is seeking a Supervising Building Inspector for the Building Division, Plan Review Section. The ideal candidate will have experience in providing oversight to other building inspectors in a lead or supervisory role. They will have extensive experience in interpreting and applying the California Building Standards Codes, as well as experience in reading and reviewing building plans for code compliance. The candidate will have excellent customer service and communication skills and the ability to research and make determinations regarding technical code requirements. Supervise, lead, assign, and review the work of subordinate building inspectors performing rule specific inspections, plan review, project management, or case management activities for conformance with building plans, specifications, codes, ordinances and standards; perform other related duties and responsibilities as required. A higher-level administrator or management personnel will provide general administrative or technical supervision. This position provides general supervision of personnel in all disciplines.
Depending on assignment and certifications, duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to :
Knowledge of : - Principles and techniques of supervision and training. - Principles and techniques of project management for building inspectors. - Principles of interpersonal communication and customer service. - Methods, practices, and materials used in commercial and residential construction work. - Methods and techniques used in field inspection. - Software systems utilized by the inspectors for building maintenance and construction projects. - Safety rules, regulations, and practices applied to construction and inspection work. Ability to : - Provide effective supervision, training, and evaluation of subordinate staff. - Conduct the more complex inspections. - Manage projects for building inspectors. - Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. - Understand and work with diagrams, specifications, plans, and similar documents at a level necessary for efficient job performance. - Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, engineers, architects, contractors, tenants, owners, and the general public. - Operate a motor vehicle. - Use computer and various software to collect, analyze, and summarize data; and, maintain and prepare reports. - Anticipate issues and seek resolutions through various resources. - Access inspection areas within construction sites.
Completion of the 12th grade or GED certificate. AND Two years of experience performing duties as a Building Inspector with the City of Sacramento in which one year of work included lead or supervision of technical employees.
OR Completion of 21 units of college level courses in building inspection, construction, electrical, plumbing, carpentry or mechanical architecture, design, plan permitting, code enforcement or other related areas. AND Three years of experience performing duties comparable to a Building Inspector with the City of Sacramento in another municipality or county government agency in which one year of work included lead or supervision of technical employees.
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License at the time of appointment. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical disability will be considered for accommodation on a case by case basis.
Incumbents must possess certification from an approved certifying organization in their specific work disciplines within one year of appointment. Maintenance of these certifications is a condition for continued employment in this classification.
