Position : Highway & Roads Market Sector DirectorPrimary Responsibilities

Market Sector Directors (MSD) drive our business within HDR's matrix management structure. The Highway & Roads (H&R) sector is the largest, generating nearly $1B annually worldwide. It includes clients managing highways, toll roads, local roads, and bridges, offering services like design, traffic engineering, transportation planning, and tolling.

This role requires understanding H&R clients, funding, revenue streams, and governmental structures at various levels. The responsibilities are primarily divided into :

  • Market leadership and business development (~70%)
  • Support to operations (10%)

The Director sets strategic vision, supports growth initiatives, develops staff, and collaborates with regional and business group leaders to achieve financial and strategic goals. They maintain communication with leadership to implement growth and operational plans.

HDR's client base spans US state departments, towns, counties, and cities, with expansion plans into Canada, UK, Middle East, and Australia. The sector professionals engage with clients for design, planning, construction management, and comprehensive services.

The Director supports business development, client management, growth initiatives, best practices, and brand positioning. Engagement with employees and clients is crucial to reinforce HDR's image and market presence.

Business Development

Responsibilities include understanding market dynamics, supporting local business approaches, and leading efforts to win contracts. The Director collaborates across sectors and regions to :

  • Develop and implement strategic vision for the sector
  • Manage key clients and projects
  • Promote HDR services and participate in industry associations
  • Build strategic partnerships and industry presence
  • Staff Development

    Lead staff growth, technical excellence, recruitment, and performance evaluations, ensuring the sector's operational effectiveness.

    Support to Operations

    Assist in project delivery, monitor financial performance, review staff allocations, and promote quality assurance and lessons learned.

    Qualifications

    Preferred :

  • 20+ years in highway / bridge planning or engineering
  • PE license or equivalent
  • Leadership in industry associations
  • Required :

  • Bachelor's in Engineering or related field
  • 12+ years industry experience with leadership
  • Strong communication, client management, and business skills
