School Bus Driver

Under the direction of the Transportation Manager or other assigned administrator, the School Bus Driver operates a school bus over designated routes in accordance with time schedules, picking up and discharging students.

Examples of duties include :

  • Driving a school bus over designated routes in accordance with specified time schedules and in accordance with regulations and laws related to pupil transportation.
  • Transporting students to and from school, special events, and field trips.
  • Observing legal and defensive driving practices.
  • Picking up and discharging students at established bus stops in a timely manner.
  • Escort students across streets.
  • Reporting incidents which affect the safety of students as necessary.
  • Enforcing and maintaining rules of conduct.
  • Reporting cases of misconduct to appropriate personnel.
  • Maintaining bus in a safe operating condition through prescribed daily vehicle inspections.
  • Transporting students with disabilities to and from designated locations.
  • Maintaining records concerning vehicle maintenance, miles driven, and number of children transported.
  • Educating students on bus safety procedures.
  • Utilizing two-way radio for bus to bus and bus to base communication.
  • Performing related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and abilities required include :

  • Safe driving practices.
  • Provisions of the California State Motor Vehicle code and Education Code applicable to the operation of vehicles transporting students.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Basic record-keeping techniques.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Operating a school bus over designated routes in accordance with time schedules.
  • Maintaining order and discipline among students while driving a school bus.
  • Maintaining assigned vehicle in a clean and safe operating condition.
  • Recognizing equipment malfunctions and taking appropriate action.
  • Learning designated bus routes including stops and traffic hazards.
  • Maintaining routine records.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Being flexible to perform work within changing priorities and possessing sufficient interpersonal skill to work harmoniously with staff, students, administrators, parents, and others.
  • Understanding and following oral and written directions.
  • Meeting schedules and time lines.
  • Observing legal and defensive driving practices.
  • Assisting in loading and unloading handicapped children as necessary.

    • Minimum qualifications include :

  • Graduation from high school.
  • Possession of a valid California School Bus Driver Certificate (Type 1 Only).
  • Class B driver's license with passenger endorsement.
  • Valid Medical Card, and CPR and First Aid certificates.
  • DMV H6 Driving History Report.
