Sergeant - Security Officer III
The Security Services Division is a component of the Montgomery County Department of Police. Our primary responsibility is to provide daily, direct security services to County facilities and employees.
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Security professional to work in the capacity of a Sergeant - Security Officer III to lead and supervise a team of Security Officers at Progress Place. Progress Place is a Montgomery County-owned facility in Silver Spring that provides essential services to individuals experiencing homelessness and other human service issues. It houses three primary programs : Shepherd's Table, Interfaith Works, and Mobile Med. These programs offer meals, case management, medical care, clothing, and housing support. The ideal candidate will be capable of working independently, managing daily operations, and responding effectively to dynamic situations in a human services environment.
The Division is currently looking for a Security professional to work in the capacity of a Sergeant, as a Sergeant assigned to Progress Place, you will play a critical role in maintaining a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for clients, staff, and volunteers. This is a permanent assigned post with primary hours Monday through Friday requiring strong leadership, sound judgment, and a compassionate approach to working with vulnerable populations.
An example of duties includes, but is not limited to :
- Supervise and support Security Officers assigned to Progress Place
- Coordinate security coverage during meal services, clinic hours, and shelter operations
- Monitor and respond to incidents involving clients, staff, or the public
- Ensure compliance with laws, policies, and standard operating procedures
- Review and critique incident reports for accuracy and completeness
- Conduct inspections and ensure proper uniform and equipment standards
- Evaluate employee performance and provide coaching and documentation
- Investigate complaints related to Security Officer conduct or performance

Perform work assignments at different work locations as required.Work holidays, weekends and work rotating shifts during days, evenings or midnights.Accept last-minute changes in their schedule and work mandatory overtime.The individual selected for this position will be considered an "Essential Employee". Essential employees must report to work during periods of general emergency or liberal leave.
Minimum qualifications :
Four (4) years of full-time experience equivalent to that of a Security Officer I in Montgomery County; or a combination of four (4) years of experience equivalent to the Security Officer I and II levels.Completion of high school or a High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland, and satisfactory completion of all required Department training classes.Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class "C" (or equivalent) driver's license from the applicant's state of residence.Certification as a medical First Responder, or ability to obtain certification within the twelve-month probationary period; preferably within six months of appointment to the position.Preferred criteria :
Four or more years of full-time experience in Montgomery County security.Leadership or senior officer experience in a security or public safety setting.Experience working in facilities serving vulnerable or homeless populations.Experience evaluating employee performance.Experience reviewing and preparing incident reports.Familiarity with trauma-informed approaches and de-escalation techniques.
