About The Position

Job Title : Registered Nurse

License : Required

Certifications : BLS required; ACLS & NIH Stroke Education preferred

Must-Have : IV experience; knowledge of the EPIC system preferred

Description : Department : MedSurg

Number of Beds : 18, but currently able to staff a maximum of 10.

Nurse to Patient Ratios : Typically 1 : 6 or less on both days and nights; 1 : 8 rarely on nights depending on acuity and staffing.

Common Diagnoses / Types of Patients : Pneumonia, rehabilitation, urinary tract infections, general post-operative care, pain control, general medical issues, aspiration, fractures, dementia, and falls. Rare pediatric cases usually requiring IV fluids.

Experience with Intravenous (IV) therapy is preferred.

Basic knowledge of titrating drips is required, although it is not common practice.

Most commonly used titratable drip is Cardizem. Typically, patients needing this are transferred to larger facilities.

Nurses refresh their knowledge with policy and pharmacy, as drips are not often administered.

Charge Nurses do not typically take an assignment but cover emergency situations as needed.

Patient care technicians are available for vital signs, ambulation, activities of daily living, and rounding.

Respiratory Therapy equipment is not available on this unit.

Nurses conduct breathing treatments, chest physiotherapy, and patient education.

There are no telemetry or monitor technicians on the unit. Nurses must read and interpret their own cardiac strips.

Staff self-schedule, while contract staff will have schedules based on existing ones.

Weekend requirements typically involve every third weekend for staff.

Holiday rotations are required.

There is no call or standby requirement.

There are no floating requirements.

Any color or pattern of scrubs is acceptable, but scrubs are not provided.

Unit-specific orientation includes one full 12-hour shift with a preceptor.

Charting System : EpicCare Inpatient - Certified EHR Suite.
