Instrumentation Technician

JOB SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Water Treatment Manager, installs, tests, repairs, inspects, and maintains metering and recording instruments, controlling devices, data logging, and display equipment, communications, and telemetry systems. Works closely with the SCADA Analysts and Industrial Electricians to identify and complete proactive and reactive maintenance tasks. Performs related work as required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Performs work under supervision from SCADA Analyst
• Installs, maintains, repairs, overhauls, calibrates, and tests a wide variety of industrial instruments that record, indicate, control and regulate level, flow, pressure, temperature, position, and water analysis.
• Calibrates, installs, and works with digital and analog signals along with 4 – 20 milliamp (mA) signals.
• Installs, inspects, and repairs all types of radar sensors, Mag Meters, Venturi tubes, proximity sensors, level sensors, Variable Frequency Drives, and pressure sensors.
• Makes periodic preventative maintenance inspections of all metering control instruments, diagnosing existing or potential trouble; cleans, lubricates, calibrates and adjusts as conditions indicate.
• Locates, repairs, replaces and / or rebuilds defective electronic components such as transistors, printed circuits, resistors, capacitors, transformers, coils and relays.
• Devises and installs new circuits and modifies equipment for use with existing equipment.
• Inspects, Installs, and / or repairs manually, hydraulically, and electrically operated valves, making minor repairs as required.
• Installs, repairs, and calibrates chemical feed equipment such as polymer, ammonia, and chlorine equipment.
• Lays out, installs, test, and calibrates instruments and related devices for controlling automatic equipment for measuring flow, pressure, and temperature.
• Repairs and maintains telemetry systems.
• The majority of position duties are required to be performed on-site.
• May work with outside contractors.
• Prepares and updates schematic drawings of equipment.
• Essential Employees may be required to work during a declared or undeclared emergency.
• Performs other related job duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience :

Associate's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Mathematics, Physics or Instrument / Controls Technology or three (3) years of highly automated electronics instrumentation installation and repair experience. An equivalent combination or related training and experience may substitute.

Special Qualifications :

For positions requiring the operation of City vehicles, must possess a valid current Florida driver's license, or be able to acquire one within 45 days of hire.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is generally medium and may require exerting up to 100 pounds of force rarely, and up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required :

Work is performed in a dynamic environment that requires the ability to be sensitive to change and responsive to changing goals, priorities, and needs. Work may be performed in both in and out-of-door environments with exposure to the wind, rain, cold, heat and cramped spaces.
