Street Sweeper

The City of Roanoke's Department of Public Works is seeking a Street Sweeper to serve in the Stormwater Division. This position is responsible for operating a street sweeper and / or dump truck, including both automatic and manual transmission vehicles. The role may also involve operating a backhoe, heavy front-end loader, or skid steer for street and construction repair work.

Key responsibilities include performing basic service and minor repairs or adjustments on equipment, completing accurate log sheets, checklists, and pre-trip inspection reports, and assisting with standby or emergency work as needed.

Qualifications :

  • Class B CDL preferred.
  • Must obtain a Class B CDL with tanker (N) endorsement within 12 months of hire.
  • Must obtain a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) within 6 months of hire.

Salary : $36,514.24 - $41,991.37 Annually

Examples of Duties :

  • Performs basic service, inspections, and minor equipment repairs / adjustments.
  • Completes accurate log sheets, checklists, and pre-trip inspection reports.
  • Operates equipment for snow removal and assists with special events or emergency tasks, including some nights and weekends.
  • Inspects vehicles / equipment for safety and ensures proper supplies for daily assignments.
  • Maintains compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and departmental safety procedures.
  • Practices sound safety and housekeeping measures at all times.
  • Uses personal protective equipment (PPE) as required, which may include respiratory protection.
  • Supplemental Information :

    Language Skills : Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

    Reasoning Ability : Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

    Certificates, Licenses, Registrations : Depending on area of assignment, may require possession of an appropriate class A, B or C commercial driver's license with Hazardous Material and tank endorsement. May require Playground Inspection Certification to be acquired after hire. May require journey-level licensure in an area of skilled trades.
