The New York Times Print Hub is looking for a temporary Staff Editor to join our award-winning News Design team, which designs and produces the daily sections of the print newspaper : Page One, International, National, Metropolitan, Business, Sports and Arts. We seek a detail-oriented journalist with strong news judgment and visual skills to plan, organize, edit and design the news pages.

This is an in-office position based in New York City with regular attendance in the office four days each week. Some remote work may be possible per department guidance.

Representation : This position is represented by the NewsGuild of New York.

Responsibilities

  • Track publication plans from the reporting desks at The Times.
  • Make judgments on which articles merit priority in the newspaper, determine space allocation, and organize the news sections by subject matter while meeting deadlines.
  • Reimagine a digital story presentation for print, including accessibility and engagement when converting interactive or video elements, and text-scrolling image stories into print layouts.
  • Collaborate with multiple assigning desks as part of the planning and design process.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of journalistic independence and a commitment to the mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • Report to the Design Director of Print News and Editor of Newspaper Production.

Basic Qualifications

  • 4+ years of design experience in a newsroom environment.
  • Portfolio of story-driven work demonstrating sound news judgment and strong design skills, including impact, typographic voice, layout and color, and a sense of narrative proportion for news value.
  • Proficiency in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop, with familiarity in Illustrator.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues from diverse backgrounds and varying technical levels.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience selecting, editing and preparing imagery for print.
  • Ability to adapt to changes and tight deadlines in the evening.
  • Experience in feature design, art direction, and planning / assembling special sections is a bonus.
  • Experience with CUE Print or CCI Newsgate is also a bonus.
