Substance Use Disorder Counselor Trainee
This is the Trainee level in the series. Under direct supervision, this position is designed for individuals currently enrolled in an accredited program for Substance Use Disorder Counseling and working toward obtaining the necessary certifications or qualifications for full licensure. It provides hands-on training and practical experience while attending school. The individual will receive supervision and support from experienced staff as they develop the skills to become a fully licensed Substance Use Disorder Counselor.
Substance Use Disorder Counselor I
Under general direction and close supervision, this is the entry-level position in the series. Provides substance use education, counseling, crisis intervention and case management services. May assist with planning and implementing SUD prevention activities and programs. Applicants should have knowledge about alcohol / substance abuse and addiction issues, best practices and techniques used to treat individuals with substance use disorders, and ethical and professional standards in the SUD treatment field. They are expected to gain additional knowledge regarding education, counseling and treatment methodologies as experience increases. Performs related work as assigned.
Substance Use Disorder Counselor II
Under general direction and supervision, this is the journey-level position in the series. Provides Substance Use Disorder education, individual and group counseling, crisis intervention and case management services. May assist with planning and implementing SUD prevention programs. Applicants should possess substantial knowledge of alcohol / substance abuse and addiction issues, treatment methodologies, dual diagnosis concepts, and ethical and professional standards in the SUD field. Performs related work as assigned.

Successful candidates will demonstrate knowledge of the science of addiction, substance use disorders and related problems. Applicants must show a commitment to continuing education and professional development.
Knowledge
Substance Use Disorder Counselor Trainee — Basic knowledge of SUD treatment modalities and recovery principles.
Substance Use Disorder Counselor I — Methods and techniques of individual and group facilitation; understanding of substance use, prevention, youth development, and related topics; basic human behavior and cultural awareness; familiarity with community resources and first aid / CPR.
Substance Use Disorder Counselor II — Knowledge of laws, policies, confidentiality, counseling techniques, and community resources.
Skills and Abilities
Substance Use Disorder Counselor Trainee — Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work with diverse clients; work independently and as part of a team; maintain confidentiality and ethics.
Substance Use Disorder Counselor I — Ability to follow instructions; build relationships with participants and agencies; maintain records; effective written and oral communication; cultural sensitivity; assess participant needs.
Substance Use Disorder Counselor II — Ability to apply regulations; facilitate counseling; maintain confidentiality; assess client and family needs; use computer systems; maintain records and reports; communicate effectively.
Education and Experience
Substance Use Disorder Counselor Trainee — Currently enrolled in an accredited SUD Counseling program; must remain enrolled while employed. Failure to promote to SUDC I within 18 months may result in termination.
Substance Use Disorder Counselor I — Completion of education and experience requirements for professional certification as an addiction treatment counselor in California; status as a Registered Intern in California.
Substance Use Disorder Counselor II — Completion of requirements for professional certification as an addiction treatment counselor in California; status as a Certified Counselor in California; two years of experience equivalent to Counselor I.
Possession of a valid California Driver's License issued by the CA DMV.
Applicants in recovery must be clean and sober for at least three years.
