Director of Artificial Intelligence (Higher Education)

Remote (U.S.based - HQ in SF)

Up to $265,000 + 15% bonus

The Role

As the Director of AI for our Higher Education division, you will lead a cross-functional team of AI researchers and data scientists responsible for driving the company’s most ambitious AI initiatives. You will oversee the development of advanced generative AI systems that power personalized learning, assessment, and engagement experiences.

Reporting directly to senior leadership, you’ll collaborate with colleagues across product, engineering, and innovation teams to translate cutting-edge research into scalable, impactful solutions.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead and mentor a team of AI researchers and data scientists specializing in Generative AI (GenAI).
  • Build a culture of technical excellence, continuous learning, and creative problem-solving.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders to identify opportunities for AI-driven innovation in learning products.
  • Define project goals, scope, and technical approaches in alignment with broader organizational objectives.
  • Present insights, recommendations, and progress updates to senior stakeholders in both technical and non-technical terms.
  • Oversee resource planning, team performance, and operational efficiency.

What You Bring

  • PhD (or equivalent experience) in AI, Data Science, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of relevant experience, with a track record of leadership in AI or machine learning.
  • Strong foundation in Generative AI, natural language processing, or similar advanced AI domains.
  • Proven ability to bridge strategic vision with hands-on technical execution.
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Experience fostering collaboration across product, research, and engineering teams.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience leading high-performing AI or data science teams.
  • Demonstrated success deploying large-scale AI systems in production environments.
  • Background in educational technology, learning science, or digital content development.
