Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) Nurse

Job Summary :

A Cardiac Intensive Care Nurse provides specialized nursing care to critically ill patients with heart conditions. These nurses work in the Cardiac ICU (CICU), monitoring cardiac patients post-surgery, during heart failure episodes, or after life-threatening events such as heart attacks. The role demands quick critical thinking, proficiency in advanced cardiac life support, and emotional resilience.

Responsibilities :

  • Monitor, assess, and treat patients with acute and chronic cardiac conditions.
  • Operate and interpret readings from advanced cardiac monitoring equipment (e.g., ECG, telemetry, Swan-Ganz catheters, balloon pumps, impella).
  • Administer and titrate cardiac medications (e.g., vasopressors, antiarrhythmics, anticoagulants).
  • Collaborate closely with cardiologists, intensivists, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Perform post-operative care for cardiac surgery patients (e.g., CABG, valve repair / replacement).
  • Provide immediate response to cardiac emergencies (e.g., Code Blue situations).
  • Educate patients and their families about cardiac care, recovery, and lifestyle changes.
  • Maintain accurate and timely patient documentation.
  • Adhere to infection control and patient safety protocols.

Qualifications & Requirements :

Education :

  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) – BSN preferred.
  • Licensure & Certification :

  • Active Connecticut RN license
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) – required.
  • Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) certification – preferred or required within a certain period after hire.
  • Experience :

  • 1–2 years of experience in ICU or critical care setting.
  • Previous cardiac nursing experience is strongly preferred.
  • Key Skills :

  • Strong critical thinking and clinical judgment.
  • Proficiency in interpreting ECGs and other cardiac diagnostics.
  • Competence with ventilators, defibrillators, and infusion pumps.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork.
  • Emotional stability and resilience under pressure.
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
