Position Summary
The Journeyman Electrician responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems supporting highway maintenance and facilities operations. This position requires expert working knowledge of electrical systems, troubleshooting, and code compliance, with the ability to read and follow technical drawings, schematics, and blueprints. The Journeyman Electrician ensures that all work is performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with NEC and DOT requirements.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on high-mast lighting, street lighting circuits, underpass lighting, and roadway electrical distribution systems.
- Troubleshoot, test, and repair wiring, circuits, junction boxes, contactors, breakers, and other highway-related electrical components using proper diagnostic tools.
- Maintain and repair electrical service for traffic management devices, ITS equipment, support power feeds, and other roadway systems.
- Inspect highway lighting and electrical installations for compliance with NEC, FDOT, and local code requirements.
- Install and repair conduit, pull boxes, and underground wiring associated with roadway and right-of-way power distribution.
- Conduct electrical inspections as part of routine highway patrols to identify outages, damage, or deficiencies, document findings and corrective actions.
- Operate bucket trucks, man-lifts, and related equipment safely to service overhead lighting and signs.
- Respond to after-hours and emergency call-outs (crashes, storm damage, outages) to restore roadway electrical service quickly and safely.
- Coordinate with MOT (Maintenance of Traffic) crews to set up safe work zones while performing electrical maintenance along active roadways.
- Ensure all work areas and activities comply with OSHA, MOT, and company safety practices, including the proper use of PPE and adherence to lockout / tagout procedures.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and electrical components replaced in the CMMS or required logs.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of highway electrical maintenance operations.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES :
Knowledge
Expert understanding of electrical theory, installation, and maintenance practices.National Electrical Code (NEC), OSHA standards, and DOT requirements applicable to electrical systems and highway projects.Methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in commercial, industrial, and roadway electrical work.Safe electrical troubleshooting techniques and lockout / tagout procedures.Skills
Proficiency in installing, repairing, and replacing electrical systems and components.Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, one-lines, and technical diagrams.Strong problem-solving and diagnostic skills for electrical malfunctions.Effective written and verbal communication skills; professional interaction with team members and external stakeholders.Organization and time management to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines.Abilities
Work outdoors in extreme weather conditions (heat, rain, cold, storms).Travel as assigned across job sites; respond promptly to emergency call-backs.Sit, stand, climb, stoop, kneel, and walk across uneven ground for extended periods.Lift and carry up to 50–60 lbs. as required during the course of work.Uphold company policies, ethical standards, and safety practices consistently.EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE :
Required Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED.Must possess an active and valid Florida Journeyman Electrician LicenseMust be at least 23 years old (per company insurance requirements).Must possess an active and valid Florida driver’s license with no restrictions and be able to pass a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check and maintain insurability under company policy.5+ years of progressively responsible facilities maintenance experience, including at least 2 years in a supervisory or lead role.Basic math, reading, and recordkeeping skills to complete work orders and material logs accurately.Ability to obtain Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) or Flagger certification within company timelinesWilling and able to travel within the assigned district and report to different work sites; living within a reasonable response time to the yard is preferred.Compliance with the company's Drug and Alcohol Policy; able to pass pre-employment and random testing. A background check and job-related physical may be required.Preferred qualifications
CDL A or BPrior experience with highway / tolling facilities, LED roadway lighting, traffic devices, or similar public infrastructure projects.OSHA 30 and NFPA 70E training.Experience working with generators, UPS / ATS systems, or other backup power sources.Familiarity with CMMS / work order systems for documentation and tracking.
