Description :

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a 20-bed unit that provides care to critically ill or injured pediatric patients from birth to young adulthood.

The PICU team manages a wide range of health issues, including trauma, surgery, respiratory, cardiac, hematology / oncology, and neurologic disorders.

Pediatric intensive care nurses are specially trained to deliver state-of-the-art care to infants, children, and adolescents requiring the highest level of medical or post-surgical nursing care.

The unit is staffed 24 / 7 by board-certified pediatric intensivists who collaborate with various medical and surgical services to offer comprehensive care.

The PICU team consists of trained personnel, including respiratory therapists, nutritionists, pharmacologists, speech therapists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, social workers, and child life specialists.

Patient care includes bedside procedures such as central line placements, arterial line placements, lumbar punctures, intubations / extubations, CRRT initiation / discontinuation, and ECMO cannulations / decannulations.

Equipment used includes advanced technology to support critical care management.

The unit caters to patients with a variety of diagnoses requiring advanced treatment modalities, ensuring high-quality care in a family-centered environment.

Nurses may be required to float to NICU and other pediatric units as needed.

Patient ratios are typically 1 : 1 or 1 : 2 for days and nights, with weekend coverage required.

Interdisciplinary support is available from various specialties to enhance patient outcomes and family support.
