This position will represent Duke Energy before Ohio state governmental officials, legislators, agencies, and related organizations to advance the strategic legislative and policy interests of the company and its business units. This position serves as one of the company's registered lobbyists in Ohio and is responsible for establishing and maintaining appropriate relationships, conducting permissible lobbying activities, and influencing decisions and outcomes of the legislative and executive branches of state government. These objectives may be accomplished through collaboration with peer utilities, other businesses, industry organizations, coalitions, and special interest groups to foster and promote the interests of Duke Energy. This position reports to the Vice President, Government Affairs.
Responsibilities :
- Ensure that a well-conceived position is established on state issues important to the company's strategic interests and that the position is effectively communicated to the appropriate members of the legislature, the executive branch and staff to achieve the desired policy outcomes.
- Monitor the legislative and executive branches; alert, advise, and consult with upper management and the business units about state issues or political developments that could benefit or harm the company; work with internal subject matter experts to ensure accurate and timely analysis and tracking of relevant legislation and state policy.
- Ensure effective relationships with the legislative and executive branches, with a special emphasis on the southwest Ohio delegation that represents the company's service territory.
- Provide clear overall direction and guidance, in consultation with the SGA Director, to contract lobbyists and consultants in relation to the execution of legislative and executive branch strategy.
- When appropriate, in consultation with the SGA Director, direct strategy for initiating grassroots or third-party actions on legislative and executive branch issues and coordinate strategy with other companies, business and industry organizations, special interest groups; when necessary, create statewide third-party organizations and coalitions to advance the company's interests.
- Engage the employees' Political Action Committees (PAC) by providing legislative updates for informational purposes during regular PAC meetings or in other formats, as requested.
- Promote high morale and performance and effective teamwork with others in the department and company.
