Job Announcement : Assistant Public Defender
This is a non-Civil Service announcement. The Office is seeking to hire attorneys with at least three to five years of practice experience for the position of Assistant Public Defender. Candidates must be licensed to practice law in Tennessee or licensed in another state with the ability to become licensed in Tennessee within six months. Responsibilities include representing clients in General Sessions, Criminal, and Juvenile Courts, and collaborating with defense team members such as investigators, social workers, and legal assistants.
The Metropolitan Public Defender's Office defends adults accused of crimes in Davidson County who cannot afford private counsel, and children charged with delinquency. Cases range from misdemeanors to capital murder. Our mission is to defend clients' liberties, honor, and constitutional rights through zealous advocacy and to foster a just, fair, and compassionate legal system. Responsibilities
Supervision and Work Conditions
May supervise Criminal Investigators and support staff. Reports to the Public Defender or designee, with oversight on complex matters. Work involves courthouse and jail environments with safety precautions due to potential risks. Physical activities include standing, walking, climbing, and bending.
Qualifications
Licensing
Licensed to practice law in Tennessee, or pending application. All employees must reside in Tennessee or become residents within six months of employment, per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078.
