REMCAN is seeking Railway Laborers for our 2025 season. We are looking for full-time applicants eager to travel on a rotational schedule.

Summary : Railway laborers work primarily in our Track Maintenance department. REMCAN’s Track Maintenance department is responsible for all railway track maintenance and construction projects, from new track construction to emergency repairs. The laborer role is an entry-level position where successful candidates will work alongside crews comprised of other laborers, equipment operators, welders, and foremen.

PRIMARY / ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Cleaning and preparation of the construction site
• Digging ditches, trenches, backfills, excavations and compacts; leveling earth to grade specifications using necessary tools
• Working with Operators to facilitate alignment, movement and adjustment of machinery, equipment and materials
• Loading, unloading materials, machinery and tools as necessary
• Driving spikes
• Moving and setting cross ties and lengths of steel rail
• Shoveling stone
• Adjusting switches
• Lubricating switches
• Tightening track bolts
• Carrying track jack (approx. 50 lbs.)
• Must wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos
• Effectively presenting information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization
• Performing basic mathematics to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
• Complying with all rules and regulations and instructions
• Applying common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions
• Troubleshooting issues and dealing with typical problems that occur in track maintenance in the field
• Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION and / or EXPERIENCE

PHYSICAL DEMANDS : Due to the Safety Sensitive nature of this position, the employee is regularly required to verbally communicate while performing the duties of this job. The employee must regularly lift and / or move heavy weights. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT : While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and may be required to work nights, holidays, and weekends. The employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. May be exposed to live track / trains and high voltage. Exposure to harsh weather conditions including very hot and very cold weather.
