Youth Services Librarian, Ayer Library (Ayer)

SUMMARY

The Librarian I-Youth Services (LI-YS) is a professional position that provides frontline customer service in our Youth Services Department and is responsible for designing and delivering high-quality library services to all patrons. The LI-YS reports to the Head of Youth Services; the LI-YS may also receive direction on a project-by-project basis from the Library Director or the Head of Adult Services. The LI-YS may supervise the work of Library Assistants, Library Clerks, and / or volunteers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The LI-YS executes the following duties and responsibilities in collaboration with the Library Director and Department Heads :

• Provides judgment-free circulation, reference, and reader’s advisory services to children, teens, caregivers, and patrons of all ages.
• Offers direction, information, and instruction to patrons of all ages in the use of library resources and technology.
• Designs and executes impactful Youth Services programs and activities in person and virtually.
• Works with community organizations to collect and distribute information about services for youth, explore programming opportunities outside of the building, and collaborate on initiatives.
• Designs flyers, handouts, and displays to market library programs and resources.
• Creates content for library social media accounts, monitors social media comments and messages, and develops social media statistics reports.
• Collaborates on Constant Contact newsletters.
• Assists with the development and maintenance of the Library’s circulating collection of physical and digital resources, including our Library of Things.
• Collects, analyzes, and reports usage statistics.
• Identifies trends and needs, and makes recommendations for improving circulation.
• Pursues professional development opportunities to stay up-to-date on library trends.
• Processes new library materials and performs original and copy cataloging of all formats of library materials to facilitate their identification, access, and use.
• Other duties and responsibilities as needed or assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY, & SKILLS

This position requires :

HOURS

32 hours per week including evenings, plus one 5-hour Saturday shift every other weekend.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Minimal physical effort is required to perform most duties; some duties require moderate effort such as lifting and carrying up to 35 lbs. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, speak, hear, use hands to operate equipment, climb, stoop, reach with hands and arms and lift, move, and push equipment. Vision requirements include the ability to read routine documents and use a computer.
