Job Description :

Under the supervision of the nursing department's management, the Medical-Surgical Float Pool RN assumes the responsibility for the nursing processes of assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation needed to deliver safe, evidence-based care within their scope of practice on the acute care and surgical nursing units.

This position assesses, plans, implements, evaluates and documents nursing care of patients in accordance with organizational policies and in accordance with standards of professional nursing practice utilizing the framework for professional nursing practice and development. This position utilizes specialized knowledge, judgment, and nursing skills necessary to assess data and plan, provide and evaluate care appropriate to the physical and developmental age of assigned patients.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; BSN required; knowledge of general nursing theory and practice required; knowledge of principles, methods and techniques involved in performing general nursing services and adapting or modifying standards of nursing practices for care of specific medical and surgical cases.

Credentials

Must have passed the NCLEX examination, and possess a current, valid RN license in state of practice, temporary RN license in state of practice, or compact RN licensure for current state of practice by the time they start their first day of work.

Essential Functions

  • Demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and clinical judgment necessary to provide high-quality nursing care across a variety of medical-surgical and perioperative units.
  • Conducts comprehensive assessments of patients' physical, psychological, social, spiritual, educational, developmental, cultural, and discharge planning needs. Reviews patient history, labs, diagnostics, and input from other healthcare team members to support clinical decision-making.
  • Develops and implements individualized plans of care based on assessment findings, patient / family input, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Plans are goal-oriented, measurable, and responsive to evolving patient conditions and outcomes.
  • Provides direct patient care in accordance with physician orders, nursing protocols, evidence-based practice standards, and hospital policies. Performs both complex and routine procedures and treatments safely and competently.
  • Monitors and evaluates patients' responses to interventions and modifies plans of care as needed to ensure optimal outcomes. Communicates changes and concerns to physicians and the care team promptly.
  • Delegates appropriately and provides supervision and guidance to licensed nurses, support personnel, and nursing students involved in the patient's care. Intervenes when deviations from standards of care are identified.
  • Provides clear and timely documentation of assessments, interventions, patient responses, teaching, and care planning in accordance with institutional policies.
  • Educates patients and families by explaining procedures, treatments, medications, and discharge instructions at a level they can understand. Verifies informed consent where required.
  • Serves as a mentor and preceptor for new nurses and students, supporting their orientation, skill development, and integration into the team. Assesses their learning needs and provides ongoing coaching and clinical support.
  • Promotes professional growth through participation in shared governance, quality improvement initiatives, and activities that advance safe, timely, and equitable patient care.
  • Applies leadership principles and critical thinking in daily practice, supporting team coordination, effective communication, and high standards of clinical excellence.
