Role summary

The BCBA supports Atlas mission to create inclusive, engaging, and academically rigorous classrooms by evaluating student behavior, developing effective behavior intervention plans, and coaching staff to implement these strategies consistently and successfully. This role leads Tier 2 and Tier 3 behavioral supports, contributes to the schools MTSS framework, and serves as an integral member of IEP teams to ensure individualized behavioral goals and supports are aligned with student needs.

Key responsibilities

Assessment and Planning

  • Conduct comprehensive Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) through direct observation, staff and family interviews, and review of behavioral and academic data to identify the function of behavior.
  • Develop Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) that include precise operational definitions of target behaviors, proactive prevention strategies, skill-acquisition goals, and reinforcement systems designed to promote replacement behaviors.
  • Train and coach classroom teams (teachers, paraprofessionals, and related service providers) on consistent implementation of behavior plans, data collection procedures, and progress monitoring.
  • Evaluate and recommend classroom- and school-wide supports that align with Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions within the MTSS framework.
  • Coach and monitor Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) in collecting behavioral data, monitoring fidelity of implementation, and tracking progress toward individual ABA plans and IEP behavioral goals.

Implementation and Coaching

  • Provide ongoing professional development to staff on behavior principles, de-escalation strategies, and implementation of Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) and ABA-based interventions.
  • Model and coach evidence-based strategies and interventions in real-time classroom settings to ensure staff feel confident and competent in applying them.
  • Deliver direct ABA therapy to students as outlined in their individualized plans, focusing on skill acquisition, behavior reduction, and functional communication.
  • Design user-friendly data sheets, progress-monitoring tools, and visual schedules, and train staff to collect and record behavioral and academic data accurately and consistently.
  • Monitor intervention fidelity and student progress, analyze data trends, and adjust behavior plans and instructional strategies as needed to improve outcomes.
  • IEP and Compliance

  • Present assessment findings and behavior intervention recommendations during IEP and problem-solving meetings, ensuring data-driven decision-making.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in accordance with IDEA, Section 504, FERPA, and BACB ethical standards.
  • Complete and maintain therapy logs and billing documentation to ensure Medicaid reimbursement eligibility and compliance with all student service logging requirements.
  • Crisis Prevention and Response

  • Develop proactive regulation plans and design classroom environmental arrangements that promote student self-regulation, prevent escalation, and support positive behavior.
  • Participate in behavior-related risk reviews, collaborate with school leadership to assess patterns and contributing factors, and implement restorative supports and re-entry plans that promote student accountability and relationship repair.
  • Analyze behavioral data schoolwide to identify trends, patterns, and potential disproportionality in discipline or interventions, and make recommendations for equitable and effective practices.
  • Family and Community Partnership

  • Communicate behavior plans and intervention strategies in clear, family-friendly language to ensure understanding and consistency across settings.
  • Collaborate with parents and caregivers to co-design home supports that reinforce school-based interventions and promote generalization of skills.
  • Provide parent training and ongoing coaching to build caregiver confidence in supporting regulation, communication, and behavior at home.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with outside providers (e.g., therapists, medical professionals, or service agencies) to ensure alignment of goals and continuity of care.
  • Supervision and Leadership

  • Supervise Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) and behavior technicians, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, ethical ABA services aligned with best practices.
  • Provide BACB-compliant supervision and mentorship to trainees pursuing certification, including observation, feedback, and documentation requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with the Head of Student Support to design, monitor, and strengthen the schools Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), ensuring alignment of behavioral and academic interventions.
  • Report directly to the Director of Special Education and serve as a key member of the student support team.
  • Minimum qualifications

  • Current BCBA certification in good standing.
  • Eligible for or holding Missouri Licensed Behavior Analyst credential.
  • Masters degree in behavior analysis, special education, psychology, or related field.
  • Two or more years providing school-based behavior analytic services, including FBA and BIP leadership.
  • Experience coaching adults and supervising RBTs.
  • Preferred qualifications

  • Experience in charter or urban public school settings.
  • Familiarity with PBIS, MTSS, and inclusive instructional practices.
  • Training in trauma-informed, non-aversive, and function-based supports.
  • Bilingual skills or experience supporting multilingual learners.
  • Knowledge, skills, and mindsets

  • Expert ABA knowledge applied pragmatically in classrooms.
  • Strong data literacy and ability to build simple, sustainable systems.
  • Culturally responsive practice and commitment to equity.
  • Clear, compassionate communicator with families and staff.
  • Organized, reflective, and able to manage multiple cases.
