Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced Med / Surg RN for a 12-hour night shift at a Level III Trauma Center with NIHSS certification required.

Responsibilities

  • Position is based on a 40-bed acute care Med / Surg unit within a hospital setting
  • Primary patient population includes medically stable adults with conditions like COPD, CHF, CAD, diabetes, ETOH withdrawal, dementia, kidney failure, sepsis, and various wounds
  • Some surgical patients may be assigned, but most surgical cases are managed on a dedicated unit
  • Stroke-certified unit with training provided during onboarding
  • Usual patient ratio is 1 : 5–6 for RNs
  • Nurses are supported by CNAs, Health Unit Clerks (days), and Centralized Camera Monitoring Techs
  • Uses Meditech EMR, Baxter IV pump, Pyxis medication dispensing, and Voalte communication system
  • Rotating 12-hour night shifts (1930–0700) with 6 weekend shifts required every 6 weeks
  • Floating may be required to Med / Surg combo, Surgical, Oncology, or Progressive Care Units as needed
  • 1 day of general orientation and an additional 12-hour unit-specific orientation provided
  • Responsible for acute care delivery, including primary care for 1–2 patients as needed
  • Team structure includes 3–4 RNs and 2–3 CNAs per side each shift, along with unit supervisors and dedicated support staff
  • Bedside shift reports, hourly rounding, and use of white boards are required practices
  • RTO must be approved before hire and a commitment to three 12-hour shifts per week is necessary
  • Expected to work 1–2 holidays during the contract period; night shift observes holiday on the eve
  • Clean scrubs required with no restrictions on hair color, tattoos, or piercings
  • Free parking is available with a shuttle service during winter months
  • Opportunity for contract extension or possible transition to full-time employment
  • Requirements

  • Active MT or compact RN license required
  • Minimum 1 year of recent Med / Surg experience with broad clinical skills
  • Current certifications : BLS and NIHSS
  • Experience with medication management, drains / ostomies, chest tubes, wound care, and post-op ortho preferred
  • EMR experience with Meditech preferred
  • First-time travelers accepted with strong experience
