Labor Relations Coordinator

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is seeking a highly skilled Labor Relations Coordinator to provide expert consultation and guidance to management on a wide range of employee and labor relations matters. This role will involve addressing sensitive employee issues, navigating complex labor relations concerns, and ensuring compliance with relevant employment laws and regulations.

About Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) : Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is a community-centered utility that delivers vital services to Seattle residents and businesses including drinking water, drainage and wastewater, and garbage / recycling / compost. SPU also provides drinking water for 1.5 million customers in the region. SPU's work includes system maintenance and improvements and keeping Seattle clean. Job Responsibilities :

  • Provide strategic advice on labor contracts, employment law, and SPU policies.
  • Conduct investigations of grievances and complaints.
  • Represent SPU in labor-management meetings and negotiations.
  • Build relationships with employees, management, and union representatives.
  • Coach and mentor management on HR issues related to unions.
  • Interpret and apply labor contracts, policies, and rules.
  • Advise management on labor and related policies, procedures, and agreements.
  • Prepare materials for grievances, arbitrations, and negotiations.
  • Administer HR programs mandated by law, rules, and agreements.
  • Facilitate communication between labor and management.
  • Respond to information requests and compile documentation.
  • Monitor disciplinary actions and produce reports.

    • Qualifications : Experience :

  • Three (3) years' of progressively responsible labor relations administration experience is required.

    • Education :

  • Bachelor's degree in Labor Relations, Business or Public Administration, Human Resources Management, Economics or a closely related field (Other combinations of education, training and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability.)

    • Desired Qualifications :

  • Proven work experience related to dispute resolution and problem solving.
  • Proven understanding of grievance and arbitration processes.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; using independent judgement with flexibility and reliability.
  • Work professionally and independently at a high level within an organization committed to service excellence.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft applications, such as; Excel, Word, and Outlook.

    • Work Environment / Physical Demands :

  • Work is typically performed in an office environment.
  • Hybrid : This position allows for the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule. City employees may have the option to work remotely two days per week. Individual schedules will be agreed upon by the employee and their supervisor.

    The full salary range for this position is : $62.02 - $71.99 Hourly
