Health Law Unit Managing Attorney

Atlanta Legal Aid Society ("Legal Aid") seeks a Managing Attorney for its Health Law Unit , located in its downtown Atlanta office .  The Health Law Unit is a general law unit whose attorneys represent clients facing a wide variety of civil legal issues, including family law, housing, consumer, public benefits, education, and health law.  Health Law Unit clients face a number of life-threatening illnesses affecting their health and well-being.  We coordinate services to address legal, social, and economic conditions threatening their health.  We are interested in enhancing opportunities for collaboration with other Legal Aid units and offices, and expanding the Unit’s scope of services..  The staff currently consists of a managing attorney (leaving soon), a staff attorney, a paralegal, and a grants coordinator.  In addition to a managing attorney, we are seeking another staff attorney.

Responsibilities :

• Works closely with Legal Aid’s management team.
• Maintains relations with the local bar and bench, government, community partners, and funders.
• Responsible for the overall management of the unit, including hiring, training, supervising, mentoring, and evaluating staff.
• Oversee case assignments and the legal work.
• Review and respond to client grievances.
• Review timekeeping and inspect closed files to ensure grant compliance.
• Communicate and meet with community partners and funders.
• Attend trainings with and provide training to community partners and funders.
• Supervise the preparation of quarterly and annual grant reports and plans.
• Serve as the Legal Aid designee for a major funder, conducting site visits, and participating in audits.
• Handle a caseload, perform client intake, and participate in community education and outreach.
