Cage Wash And Husbandry Manager

Supervises & provides direction & guidance to cage wash & husbandry staff. Assists Facility Manager in interviewing process, performance reviews, disciplinary actions, etc. Reviews & recommends changes to policy & procedures to ensure that CCM & investigator's staff adhere to all NU, local, state, & / or Federal rules & regulations & that all actions are completed by strictly & consistently following applicable CCM SOPs including safety procedures & guidelines. Ensures accurate & timely creation & maintenance of all associated documents & records regarding training, environmental parameters, animal health monitoring, equipment maintenance, quality control, etc. Oversees & manages procurement & proper storage of cage wash & husbandry supplies. Acts as Facilities Manager & completes all associated activities in his / her absence.

Must be able to negotiate up to a 65 lb force (push / pull) on an occasional basis. Lifting is limited to 50 lbs occasionally and 25 lbs frequently. Must be able to work a shift schedule that may include working both Saturdays and Sundays, possibly a staggered work schedule, and occasional extended time in the facility as required. Must successfully maintain physical condition that will assure efficient performance of tasks, including successful completion of physical examination. Must be enrolled in the university's occupational health program which entails filling out a health questionnaire. The health questionnaire is submitted to the university's occupational health provider for review. Must be willing to undergo job related background check.

Position requires incumbent to work either on the Chicago or Evanston campus. Some travel between the Evanston and Chicago campuses will be necessary.

Specific Responsibilities :

Manages & oversees daily operations of cage wash facilities :

  • Ensures on-going compliance with all NU, local, state, & Federal rules & regulations.
  • Ensures SOP compliance by all CCM employees & investigator staff & immediately reports deviations to management.
  • Ensures that all equipment is operational & schedules on-going maintenance & repairs.
  • Ensures that necessary supplies are purchased as efficiently as possible & available as appropriate in a timely fashion.

Manages & oversees daily operations of animal husbandry activities :

  • Ensures on-going compliance with all NU, local, state, & Federal rules & regulations.
  • Ensures SOP compliance by all CCM employees & investigator staff & immediately reports deviations to management. Ensures that animal health checks are conducted in a timely & accurate manner.
  • Ensures that all husbandry records & documents are accurately updated & maintained in a timely manner.
  • Schedules husbandry staff including rotating shifts, vacations & holidays ensuring that all activities & facilities are staffed adequately & appropriately.
  • Oversees inventory control process & storage of husbandry supplies by applying knowledge regarding methods of food preservation, rotation & / or conservation.
  • Directs sanitation of primary & secondary housing of animals as well as support areas as required.
  • Manages preparation of specialized diets.
  • Under specific direction administers medicines, injections, anesthetics & / or other treatments.
  • Prepares for departmental, IACUC, AAALAC & USDA facility inspections ensuring that facilities, processes, procedures, documentation, etc. are in order.
  • Manages & oversees daily incoming animal activities :

  • Ensures on-going compliance with all NU, local, state, & Federal rules & regulations.
  • Ensures SOP compliance by all CCM employees & investigator staff & immediately reports deviations to management.
  • Ensures that all incoming animal records & documents are accurately updated & maintained in a timely manner.
  • Verifies that all tasks related to incoming animals are completed by staff daily, verified by continually updating & maintaining appropriate documentation.
  • Ensures that staff is properly scheduled for incoming, delivery & / or animal transfers.
  • Ensures that all discrepancies are resolved interacting with staff & procurement, receiving & census as appropriate.
  • Develops & implements CCM OJT programs that ensure proper animal care & welfare. Participates in CCM, NU, local & / or national meetings, management classes, OJTs, etc.
  • Miscellaneous :

    Performs other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications :

  • A high school diploma or its equivalent is required along with a minimum of 5 years' animal husbandry or equivalent experience or 4 years' experience with aa / as / bs
  • Alas certified latg required.
  • One year of supervisory experience is required.
  • Valid state driver's license if driving animal transport van.
  • Target hiring range for this position will be between $75,000-$85,607 per year. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
