Travel Pathology Assistant - $2,766 per week in Winston Salem, NC

The average specimens per shift workload will depend on specimen complexity. The department receives approximately 325 specimens per day. A grossing professional can see anywhere from 10 to 25 cases, depending on complexity. The benchmark is typically 15-20 cases per day, encompassing a mix of complex and minor cases. The focus will range from minor excisions to complex multi-organ resections. The department has a Biopsy Tech that manages the majority of biopsies. The position involves gross processing of operating room and clinic specimens. Responsibilities include photography, sectioning, and completion of gross descriptions in surgical pathology reports. Case types encompass a wide range of subspecialties, including orthopedic, neurological, ENT, cardiothoracic, GI and colorectal, breast, GYN, and surgical oncology. Autopsy procurement is not a part of this position. Essential skills include comfort with using a bone saw for procurement of bone sections. The Pathologists Assistant must be able to independently perform gross dissection. They need to select appropriate sections for processing and complete gross descriptions accurately. Strong communication skills are necessary to address questions from attending pathologists. Techniques to prevent cross-contamination and maintain cleanliness in the pathology suite must be adhered to. While there may be interactions with residents regarding basic grossing questions, an active role in their education is not expected. Support from the department includes supervisors, accessioners, team members, residents, and pathologists. Familiarity with departmental equipment, including a bone saw and a Faxitron X-ray machine used for breast cases, is preferred. The role involves an 8-hour shift from Monday to Friday, with specific start times that may vary. Travelers will be expected to work the day before or after major holidays.
