Summary :

The Lead Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP or AMT Certified) processes and analyzes specimens for testing in a laboratory setting, verifies results for accuracy, and maintains and calibrates equipment using standards. This peer leadership position also provides limited direction and supervision to peer staff, guides the section through changes and the adoption of new or different testing platforms, and trains new hires.

Responsibilities :

  • Performs analysis by evaluating and loading specimens onto a wide range of instruments covering a range of testing sections including blood bank, coagulation, hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, and microbiology. Reviews and records results of analysis into lab information system. Approves results and performs additional analysis as warranted.
  • Provides limited peer direction and supervision. Guides staff in complex situations and responds to emergent circumstances. Trains and orients new staff to section processes and expectations. Assists with creating and maintaining section staffing schedule.
  • Participates in routine talent acquisition, development, evaluation and counseling. Identifies performance management concerns and opportunities and escalates as needed.
  • Refines and documents unit processes, especially as resulting from organizational initiatives. Contributes to and edits unit policies and practices. Assists with adoption of new or different testing platforms.
  • Maintains and calibrates instruments in accordance with quality control standards. Performs proficiency testing. Participates in root cause analysis for deviance from proficiency norms.
  • Troubleshoots instrumentation when parameters fall outside of tolerances. Contacts and coordinates with vendors for on- or off-site assistance.
  • Prepares reagents, controls, and other standards. Checks and maintains consumable levels for instrumentation.
  • Promotes a safe, clean and secure hospital environment for all, including the application of standard precautions and principles of infection control. Maintains laboratory integrity through the application of standard precautions and proper chemical hygiene as per regulatory guidelines.
  • Assists Core Lab Supervisor with administrative and other duties as assigned.

Other information : QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • Certified as a Medical Laboratory Scientist as issued by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification
  • or the American Medical Technologists (AMT) association.

  • Two (2) years of experience working as a Medical Laboratory Scientist.
  • Preferred

  • Four (4) years of experience working as a Medical Laboratory Scientist.
