SURGICAL CLINIC MEDICAL ASSISTANT

Description

PURPOSE

Responsibilities include assisting Physicians, Mid-level practitioners, and medical students with patient care when needed and in a relief role to other nursing staff members. This includes preparing patient charts and the examination rooms, taking initial medical history for the chart, taking vital signs, assisting with in office procedures, making lab and radiology appointments, calling results, sending referrals, explaining all preparations to the patients, and other duties as assigned.

FUNCTIONS

• Represent Clara Barton Medical Clinic in a professional manner in all written / verbal / electronic communication and interactions with the public
• Assist the Physician and / or Mid-level practitioner with patients. This includes preparing patient charts and the examination rooms, taking initial medical history for the chart, taking vital signs, making lab and radiology appointments, calling results, sending referrals, explaining all preparations to the patients.
• Assist Physician and / or Mid-level practitioner in all in office procedures, as required
• Remove sutures, clean wounds, and apply dressings as directed by Physician and / or Mid-level practitioner
• Notify patients of lab results as requested by Physician and / or Mid-level practitioner
• Responsible for obtaining or coordinating lab work
• Wash and dry used instruments and prepare sterilization, as required
• Receive and handle patient and other phone calls as directed by the Physician and / or Mid-level practitioner
• Assist in the proper handling and storage of all medications stored in the office
• Complete FMLA forms, coordinate referral arrangements, and send recall letters
• Assist in maintaining medical records in accordance with facility policies
• Keep examination and treatment rooms clean and properly stocked with supplies
• Assist in cleaning and checking for expired supplies and medications in the medication drug sample closet monthly.
• Assist in electronically prescribing and calling in pharmacy prescriptions and refills
• Assist peers or front office as time allows
• Perform other duties, as needed and / or directed
