Police Cadet - Campus Police

The Police Cadet position is a non-sworn, part-time developmental role within the University Medical Center Police Department. It is designed to introduce students and aspiring law enforcement professionals to public safety operations in a healthcare academic environment. Under close supervision, cadets perform a variety of support duties and receive exposure to the complexities of law enforcement in a high-acuity, multidisciplinary medical campus.

Education and Experience Required : High school diploma / GED. Must be 18 years of age. Valid US Driver's License. Completion of a pre-employment drug screen required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities : Strong interest in healthcare security, law enforcement, or public service careers. Basic understanding of medical center operations and visitor management principles. Strong written and verbal communication skills; bilingual ability is a plus. Capacity to maintain composure in fast-paced, high-stress environments. Familiarity with confidentiality requirements (e.g., HIPAA, FERPA) is strongly preferred, and Proficient in basic computer use and mobile communication devices.

Responsibilities :

  • Support administrative and operational functions including dispatch assistance, report processing, records management, and credentialing.
  • Observe sworn officers during routine patrols, patient safety escorts, and response to critical incidents within inpatient, outpatient, and research facilities.
  • Provide customer service and wayfinding support for patients, visitors, and staff while maintaining a visible, professional presence.
  • Assist with community policing initiatives, outreach events, and security surveys under guidance.
  • Participate in scenario-based training, emergency drills, and wellness / fitness development activities.
  • Monitor video surveillance systems, access control points, and security systems under supervision.
  • Assist in the inspection and stocking of police vehicles, first aid kits, and specialized equipment.
  • Uphold departmental confidentiality standards, especially regarding HIPAA-protected environments.

Physical and Environmental Demands : Requires frequent exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, frequent handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and / or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional travelling to offsite locations, occasional bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 75 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crawling, occasional crouching / stooping, occasional driving, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing / pulling, occasional reaching, occasional sitting, frequent standing, occasional twisting, and frequent walking.
