Job Description
This position acts as a lead worker for lower-level Fleet staff, as assigned by the Fleet Administrator and / or the Public Works Director. The Fleet Shop Supervisor performs master journey level, major and complex, work in the mechanical repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel-driven automotive and other mechanical equipment.
Works under the specific direction of the Fleet Administrator and the general direction of the Public Works Director. All employees are also under the general supervision of the City Manager.
Job Responsibilities

- Supervise lower level mechanics and day-to-day shop operations
- Inspect vehicles and equipment to determine recommended repairs, estimate cost of repairs, and downtime; perform repairs as required
- Assist in maintaining, and suggesting updates to, the Vehicle Safety Inspection schedule and all related documentation
- Conducts safety inspections of all City vehicles and mechanical
- Responds to telephone and / or radio requests for mechanical emergency of department equipment in the field
- Tests maintenance and repair work to ensure satisfactory results
- Assist with the maintenance and compilation of records, forms, and other documentation for all Fleet Vehicles and Fleet equipment
- Repair, inspect and maintain Fire Apparatuses
- Lubricate automotive and power driven equipment with the use of air pressure and lubrication tools
- Drain and refill crankcases; inspect and fill gearboxes with lubricants; replace lubricant fittings; maintain lubrication records; maintain lubrication stock and replace as necessary
- Inspect, charge, and replace batteries
- Change and repair tires on light and heavy equipment
- Clean and wash motorized equipment
- Maintain a safe, functional workspace, and keep shop and equipment in clean and orderly condition
- Make mechanical adjustments to automotive and other power-driven equipment
- Maintain necessary records of time, materials, and parts used
- Pack and replace wheel bearings
- Replace wear items such as shock absorbers, struts, fan belts, radiator hoses and u-joints
- Repair, maintain and replace lighting as needed based on vehicle specification, use and operation
- Perform general overhaul, tune up and repair work on automobiles and related power driven equipment
- Inspect, adjust and replace necessary units and parts including cooling, fuel and exhaust components
- Operates welding equipment to fabricate, repair, and modify parts and equipment
- Perform major maintenance, repair, and overhaul of gasoline and diesel engines, brakes, ignition systems, electrical systems, transmission, differentials, hydraulic systems, suspension and chassis systems
- Inspect, repair, replace, and / or overhaul and assemble automotive and industrial electrical equipment such as alternators, coils, generators, distributors, starters and other electronic components
- Perform occasional metal work by cutting, welding other procedures
- Train lower-level Mechanics in more complex maintenance and repair activities
- May be required, as assigned, to assist in the snow plowing of public streets
- Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Education & Experience :
An Associate Degree in Automotive Technology, or a similar fieldSix (6) years of experience as an automotive mechanic, power driven mechanic, or a heavy-duty equipment mechanic, with at least two (2) years as a lead or supervisorSpecial Qualifications & Certifications :
Must possess a valid Utah CDL class A Driver's License, with a Tanker endorsement or be able to obtain one within 6 months.Must possess a valid USDOT medical card

Salary Range :
The full salary range is as follows, please note hiring will normally occur at the Minimum of the range and will not exceed the Midpoint of the range :
Minimum - $31.55 / hr.
Midpoint - $37.86 / hr.
Maximum - $44.17 / hr.

Leave time benefits include 120 hours of paid time off (PTO) accrued annually, 40 hours of short-term medical accrued annually, and 11 holidays annually.
