Reports to :

Discipline Manager, Structural Engineering

What You Will Do :

  • Works under the direction and mentoring of the Department Manager on multiple moderate sized projects or major projects
  • Delegates and directs the work and mentoring of Graduate Structural Engineers
  • Reads, understands, and correctly interprets Building Codes as well as other applicable reference materials in order to complete design tasks.
  • Accurately develops appropriate and applicable loads and load combinations that are applied to structures.
  • Understands gravity and lateral load resisting systems and defines a clear complete load path.
  • Performs structural analysis using established methods and with the aid of computer analysis programs.
  • Designing complete gravity load framing systems and supporting foundations.
  • Designing lateral load resisting systems (braced frames, moment frames, shear walls, diaphragms, collectors, etc.)
  • Attends and helps organize regular project meetings to coordinate structural requirements with clients and other disciplines.
  • Coordinates structural scope requirements with other project disciplines.
  • Helps to oversee all aspects of multiple projects, insuring on-time and under budget project completion.
  • Helps prepare proposals to provide professional engineering services and seeks out opportunities to provide structural services. Maintains good rapport with potential clients.
  • Performs field observation site visits to observe and document status of structural projects to ensure conformance of design intent.
  • Collaboratively uses judgment to determine adaptations in methods for non-routine aspects of assignments.
  • Actively participates in project meetings during design and construction activities to represent the Company. It is possible that an occasional meeting may require travel involving both day trips and some overnight stays to out of town project locations.
  • Communicates structural design through building information modeling (REVIT) in accordance with the standards of the discipline. Position requires proficiency with REVIT in order to produce complete construction documents (including general notes, plans, sections / details, schedules, elevations, etc.) when a BIM technician is unavailable to assist with the project.
  • Prepares markups and guiding BIM technicians (when available) and or Graduate Structural Engineers for the purpose of creating construction documents and back-checking completed drafting from markups to ensure correctness and completeness.
  • Prepares the appropriate written (or edited) specification sections for typing by in-house administrative support staff.
  • Reviews work of Graduate Structural Engineers.
  • Reviews contractor submittals (shop drawings, substitutions, etc.) to determine conformance with contract documents. Makes appropriate comments and returns submittals as specified.
  • Assists other team members with project documentation including report of meeting notes, RFI, shop drawings etc.
  • Actively pursues continuing education including, but not limited to : PDH’s, Lunch & Learns, trade organization and independent study.
  • Takes an active role in trade organizations aligned with the work of our department or our clients.
  • Actively supports strategic goals of the firm, departments, and managers and understands how your actions contribute to them.
  • Key Success Factors :

  • Excellent working knowledge of and proficiency with building analysis and design software for concrete, steel, masonry, and wood, such as RAM Structural System, RAM Elements, SAP2000, Woodworks, or similar.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
  • Working knowledge of REVIT.
  • Excellent communication and organization skills
  • Exhibits “self-starter” characteristics.
  • Able to properly assess and then take appropriate action to identify problems and propose well thought solutions during design.
  • Exhibits a high sense of personal motivation and urgency coupled with appropriate action.
  • Other activities not specified here, that may become necessary as the company, position or the marketplace evolves with the changing business environment.
  • Your Qualifications :

  • BS or Masters in Civil Engineering with Structural emphasis from an ABET accredited institution
  • 4-8 years’ experience with progressive increase in responsibility.
  • Professional registration as PE (SE preferred) in the State in which the office they are based is located.
