Under the direction of the Chief Financial and Administrative Officer (CFAO), the Director of Finance provides strategic and operational leadership across all financial functions of the organization. Operating within a $26 million nonprofit with multifaceted programs—ranging from early childhood education to active aging—the Director of Finance leads budgeting, forecasting, audit coordination, compliance, financial reporting, and financial planning efforts, while directly supervising the finance team. This position is responsible for maintaining the organization's financial health, providing clear and timely insights to senior leadership, and ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) guidelines, and regulatory requirements. The Director plays a key role in both day-to-day operations and long-term strategy through internal decision support, external reporting, and continuous improvement of financial systems and processes. The position relies on strong analytical skills, collaborative relationships, and proactive financial leadership to inform decisions across the organization. Responsibilities include organization-wide forecasting, budget development and oversight, new business and program modeling, and financial grants management. This position works closely with program leadership, fundraising, operations, and human resources to ensure fiscal alignment and long-term sustainability. Primary responsibilities include, and are not limited to : Financial Management & OversightLead the daily operations of the finance department, overseeing all accounting functions including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and monthly close. Supervise and develop the finance team, including hiring, training, performance management, and day-to-day support. Ensure timely and accurate preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and internal management reports. Oversee and continuously improve internal controls, financial policies, and procedures. Audit & ComplianceLead all aspects of the annual financial audit and 990 preparations, including coordination with external auditors, preparation of audit schedules, and timely implementation of any audit recommendations. Ensure readiness for additional funder audits or financial reviews. Monitor compliance with GAAP, FASB standards, and relevant legal, donor, and regulatory requirements. Budgeting & Financial ReportingLead the design and management of the annual operating and capital budgeting process in close collaboration with the Controller, and with the support of the CFAO and department heads. Oversee the consolidation of department budgets into an organizational budget and prepare Board-ready presentations and financial dashboards. Financial Planning & ForecastingBuild and maintain rolling forecasts that integrate programmatic, operational, and philanthropic assumptions. Lead quarterly reforecasting processes to ensure alignment with changing conditions and evolving program needs. Business Modeling & Decision SupportBuild financial models for new programs, services, or earned revenue initiatives, incorporating assumptions related to enrollment, pricing, staffing, and overhead. Model philanthropic impact and return on investment (ROI) for new initiatives or capital investments in collaboration with development staff. Grants Management & Restricted FundsWork with development, program, and finance staff to oversee the financial aspects of grant budgeting, tracking, compliance, and reporting. Monitor spending against grant budgets and ensure timely use of restricted and temporarily restricted funds. Cross-Functional CollaborationServe as a strategic partner to operational and program leadership by translating financial data into clear, actionable insights. Offer budget coaching and financial literacy support to non-finance staff. Executive & Board SupportSupport the CFAO in preparing materials for the Finance Committee, Investment and Endowment Committee, Audit Committee, Facilities Committee, and Board of Directors, including monthly financial dashboards and multi-year projections. Participate in special projects and strategic planning processes as needed by the CFAO or Senior Leadership Team. Supervisory responsibilities include, and are not limited to : Identifying key areas of growth and creating individual goals for the year to update periodically and aligned with the expectations of JCC Performance Management program. Uphold the policies of the organization and align work with the overall mission, vision and strategic objectives of the JCC; report to the CFAO any related issues. Requirements Education and Experience : Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business, economics, or related field required. MBA, CPA, or similar advanced credential strongly preferred. 7–10 years of progressively responsible experience in financial analysis, planning, or budgeting, preferably in a nonprofit, educational, or mission-driven setting. Proven experience modeling earned revenue programs and philanthropic initiatives. Prior experience supporting organizational leadership and working cross-functionally with operations, HR, and fundraising. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted at the JCC’s discretion to meet this minimum hiring criteria. Skills and AbilitiesStrong computer skills, including proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office suite. Adept at learning new technology and systems, with the ability to promote and model usage across teams. Advanced Excel skills, including proficiency with complex formulas, pivot tables, and financial modeling techniques. Strong skills in data visualization and report presentation. Demonstrated ability to develop high-quality financial models for operational and strategic decision-making. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a proactive and solutions-oriented mindset. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present financial data to non-financial audiences. Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously with a high degree of accuracy. Familiarity with financial software and business intelligence tools; experience with budgeting platforms or ERP systems is a plus. Shows leadership by understanding and articulating context with clarity, enabling staff to see connections between projects, priorities, and strategic objectives Highly collaborative and able to build strong relationships across functions and levels of seniority. Outstanding project management skills from design to implementation, managing deadlines with great attention to detail, and maintaining high quality standards. Physical Requirements : This position is a hybrid role (some administrative duties may be performed remotely while others require an in-person presence) making this a hybrid position. This position primarily involves standard deskwork and computer usage; work is performed in an office environment with no extreme conditions. Must be able to sit or stand for prolonged periods. Able to work well in a busy, dynamic and sometimes noisy environment involving multiple tasks and priorities. Occasional lifting of up to 10-25 lbs. (e.g., office supplies, file box, small packages).
