Criminal Justice Training Coordinator I

The Assistant Director of Training is a Non-Sworn / Administrative position within the North Carolina Center for Safer Schools (CFSS). The Center is designed to address the problem of school and youth-related violence and serve as a customer-focused information center for research, training, and technical assistance related to school safety, crisis prevention and response. The Assistant Director of Training is responsible for leading and coordinating school safety training, guidance, and collaboration efforts across North Carolina. This position ensures the development and delivery of high-quality safety programs, provides expert consultation to schools and districts, and supports CFSS staff through training, supervision, and professional development. The role also oversees research, data collection, and funding initiatives that strengthen statewide school safety practices. This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with benefits.

Job responsibilities include :

• Designing and guiding both external and internal training programs and developing curriculum in collaboration with the Executive Director to meet statewide school safety needs.
• Delivering specialized training modules for teachers, school resource officers (SROs), counselors, and support staff on critical topics such as active shooter preparedness, mental health crisis intervention, de-escalation techniques, and emergency medical response.
• Serving as the primary resource for schools seeking safety-related guidance and works closely with district leaders, principals, school boards, and community partners to implement effective safety protocols.
• Assisting in the development and review of crisis management and emergency response plans, overseeing school safety audits, risk assessments, and vulnerability analyses, ensuring compliance with relevant safety requirements, and developing certification programs for school personnel to meet established safety standards.
• Reviewing current training programs and recommending enhancements, updating materials and protocols to reflect new research and regulations, and monitoring emerging threats such as school violence or cybersecurity risks to suggest proactive measures.
• Identifying and applying for state and federal grants to support safety initiatives, training, and technology upgrades.
• Supervising the CFSS regional staff including supervising the Lead Regional School Safety Specialist, overseeing hiring, training, mentoring, performance evaluations, and implementing disciplinary actions when necessary.

The minimum education and experience required to qualify for this position includes :

Master's degree in criminology, criminal justice, one of the social sciences, or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of progressively responsible experience in the field in which assigned; OR Bachelor's degree in criminology, criminal justice, one of the social sciences, or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution and six years of progressively responsible experience in the field in which instruction is to be conducted; OR An equivalent combination of education and experience.
