NC Newsroom Reporter – North Carolina
Overview
The NC Newsroom Reporter covers state government and politics for a collaboration of public radio stations around North Carolina. The emphasis is on stories that resonate with audiences outside of Raleigh. The project is based in Raleigh with opportunities for some remote work. Reporting includes quick turnaround spot news, interviews, reporter debriefings, anchor wraps, online reports and well-researched feature reports. The reporter will work collaboratively with the NC Newsroom editor / reporter, WUNC’s Capitol Bureau Chief, and news staff at partner stations. The position reports to WUNC’s Supervising Editor for Politics. Some after-hours or weekend work may be required and participation in fundraisers and station events is expected.
Responsibilities
- Cover state government and politics with a focus on statewide relevance beyond the capital region.
- Produce quick-turnaround spot news, interviews, anchor wraps, online reports, and in-depth feature reports.
- Collaborate with the NC Newsroom editor / reporter, WUNC’s Capitol Bureau Chief, and partner-station news staff.
- Attend events and participate in fundraising and station-related activities as required.
- Adapt reporting schedule to non-traditional hours, including weekends and after hours when needed.
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience : Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); or a relevant Bachelor’s degree with 3+ years of related experience if substitution applies. Experience may be related to directing / oversight of programs that focus higher education resources on community or regional issues.Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience : Experienced journalist with strong communication skills.Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience : Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field; master’s degree preferred. At least three years of experience as a journalist and / or radio producer, preferably in a public radio newsroom. Excellent written and oral communication; creativity, initiative; ability to plan and meet deadlines using diverse sources and collaborators; ability to work collaboratively; familiarity with North Carolina politics; experience with public radio or not-for-profit fundraising.Other : Campus Security Authority responsibilities not applicable.Position Details
