HVAC Technician - Facilities and Engineering

Job Responsibilities :

The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, is accepting applicants for an HVAC Technician in the Facilities and Engineering Department. This position is responsible for :

  • Repair and maintenance of all campus Mechanical, Air Conditioning, Heating, & Ventilation systems, ice machines, and computerized energy management systems.
  • Performing Preventive Maintenance on all HVAC and auxiliary equipment.
  • Assisting in repairs of air conditioning and chiller systems, chill water pumps, cooling towers, hot water systems, and related mechanical equipment.
  • Operating energy management systems and working on low and high voltage control systems as part of HVAC equipment.

Minimum Qualifications :

High school diploma required, with four (4) years of experience in mechanical trades or in the Mechanical / Electrical trades area. Certification in Refrigerant Transition & Recovery is required.

Knowledge of operation and maintenance of :

  • Chilled water systems (100 to 350 tons)
  • Hot water heating systems
  • Commercial and residential refrigerant, split air conditioning systems, gas package unit heaters, and heat pumps (1.5 to 120 tons)
  • Residential gas appliances, refrigerant equipment, and auxiliary systems
  • Must be capable of reading blueprints, drawings, and electrical schematics, and proficient in brazing and soldering piping and tubing. Effective communication skills are essential. Continuing education on CFC refrigerants, future alternatives, and safety standards is required.

    Ability to work independently or as part of a team with limited supervision, following oral or written instructions. Must be available for 24-hour emergency callouts, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and extreme weather conditions. Physical requirements include lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds repeatedly, working at heights up to 100 feet on roofs, scaffolds, ladders, and platforms.
