Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Advertising Photography

The School of Photographic Arts and Sciences invites applicants to apply for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position.

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses, including classes for the Advertising Photography option within the Photographic Imaging Arts BFA. The ideal candidate is a creative assignment photographer dedicated to educating future image makers, highly skilled in lighting (studio and location), and understanding contemporary photographic practices, technologies, and trends.

The candidate's portfolio should demonstrate professional experience with studio and location lighting for still product photography and portraits, concept and execution of assignment photography, and evidence of high-quality digital workflow from capture to output. Video capture and editing, as well as the integration of traditional and historical photographic processes alongside emerging technologies, workflows, and outputs, are beneficial and preferred.

The candidate must be dedicated to scholarship and service, including student career advisement. Ideal candidates will provide leadership and vision for the continued interdisciplinary vibrancy of the School's BFA program, its students, and its curriculum.

THE SCHOOL :

The School of Photographic Arts and Sciences (SPAS) is internationally recognized for its professional study of photographic practices in a wide array of related disciplines, including advertising and fine art photography, photojournalism, visual media, photographic sciences, and media technologies. Alumni are employed across the industry with NPR, NASA, Apple, NVIDIA, Canon, The Washington Post, Zeiss, The Library of Congress, Nikon, The Forsyth Institute, Olympus, Fujifilm, Sony, Adobe and Amazon Lab. Our alumni are frequent contributors to magazine covers such as TIME and WIRED, The Atlantic, as well as The New York Times Magazine. Eleven photography alumni have won a combined 15 Pulitzer Prizes.

U.S. News and World Report ranks our MFA in Photography and Related Media among the top ten photo programs in the country. Our faculty include photographic artists, practitioners, scientists and scholars, including Fulbright scholars, Magnum photographers, National Geographic photographers, Pulitzer-Prize winners, former White House photo editors, Guggenheim recipients, Louis Schmidt Award winners, and more.

THE COLLEGE : RIT's College of Art and Design is the university's creative hub where art, design, science, and technology intersect in our 200,000+ sq. ft. facility. We are a dynamic and professional arts and design community comprised of nearly 2,000 students (UG and Grad), 140 full-time faculty, 60 creative staff, and a number of professional part-time faculty, all of whom contribute to our College's ecosystem. The College's four schools offer programs in Art, Design, Crafts, Film and Animation, Photography and Photographic Sciences.

Required Minimum Qualifications

• An MFA degree or equivalent terminal degree in photography or related areas. In certain circumstances, candidates with a bachelor's degree and exceptional professional and creative experience in a related field may be considered.
• Minimum five years of teaching experience in higher education or industry equivalent.
• Minimum of five years of experience in assignment photography, including video, with a substantial record of professional accomplishment.
• Facility with applicable tools and software, including proficiency with appropriate programs like Photoshop, Capture One, After Effects, Premiere, etc.
• Portfolio must demonstrate :
• Thorough professional knowledge and experience of studio and location lighting.
• Demonstrable professional skills and expertise in the concept and execution of photographic illustration and portraiture.
• Professional knowledge and experience with digital workflow from capture to output.
• Ability to contribute meaningfully to the College's continuing commitment to cultural diversity, pluralism, and individual differences.
