Overview
The Staff / Senior Staff Attorney role is an in-house position that will handle a designated caseload of Workers' Compensation cases with appearances before the California Workers' Compensation Boards in San Francisco, Oakland, and Santa Rosa. The selected candidate will be part of a collaborative learning environment with onsite appearances in partnership with our Attorney Staff. The team is committed to personal growth and providing excellent customer service to our insureds. This role offers remote work with occasional in-person collaboration and travel depending on court openings.
Responsibilities
- Analyze complex legal and factual issues and conduct extensive and well-reasoned legal research.
- Independently create and present defense strategies on behalf of clients.
- Prepare complex pleadings, written discovery, depositions, motions and briefs in support of defense strategies with autonomy.
- Partner with Claims Partners to achieve the best results for our Hartford insureds.
- Provide effective and timely communications, information, legal advice and other services to clients on legal and factual issues.
- Communicate with the court, witnesses, opposing counsel and co-counsel with professional diplomacy and discretion.
- Facilitate prompt, efficient and effective disposition of assigned cases.
- Independently prepare and present witnesses and evidence at trials, judicial / administrative hearings, arbitrations and alternative dispute resolutions.
- Research, draft, file and argue appellate briefs in reviewing courts on behalf of clients.
- Participate in Team Huddles and provide in-house training to junior associates and / or claims partners.
- Participate in claims file reviews and attend continuing legal education seminars to maintain a high level of professional expertise.
Qualifications
Note - This position may be filled as a Staff Attorney or a Senior Staff Attorney commensurate with a candidate's experience.
Staff Attorney
Minimum of 3 years of legal practice experience handling complex Workers' Compensation cases.JD from an accredited law school and license to practice in California.Trial experience is preferred.Positive-minded and collaborative team-player attitude.Strong legal research and writing skills.Solid MS Office proficiency (Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Outlook).Lexis Nexis experience is a plus.Self-directed with excellent organizational and prioritization skills.Strong computer skills and the ability to quickly leverage new software as required.Sr Staff Attorney

The listed annualized base pay range is based on external market analysis; actual base pay may vary based on performance, proficiency, and demonstrated competencies. The base pay is one component of The Hartford's total compensation package, which may include bonuses and other incentives. The annualized base pay range for this role is : $128,000 - $192,000.
