Job Summary
The Assistant Shop Manager plays a critical role in bridging gaps between Mechanics, Field Crews, and the Shop Manager. This individual will assist in scheduling equipment maintenance and repairs, purchasing parts, managing the yard, assigning equipment repairs to mechanics, and carrying out day-to-day administrative needs of the shop. This position requires a self-starter and independent thinker who can operate effectively with minimal oversight. This person needs to be flexible, resourceful, and dependable to meet changing demand caused by down equipment and internal customer demands. This role may involve long hours and unpredictable working environments, requiring flexibility, resilience, and a strong work ethic. The individual must embody the Brooks F.I.R.S.T. principles of Family, Integrity, Respect, Safety, and Teamwork.
Essential Job Duties / Responsibilities
- Serves as a fair, honest, and straightforward leader in all interactions
- Demonstrates exceptional attendance, punctuality, reliability, and work ethic
- Coaches and works alongside mechanics
- Communicates with Foremen, Project Managers, and crews to determine equipment repairs or maintenance needs
- Provides technical training and support for both mechanics and equipment operators
- Monitors telematics data to ensure fleet maintenance exceeds manufacturer recommendations
- Plans and oversees preventative maintenance schedules
- Collaborates with the PM Service Tech to address issues identified during inspections
- Builds and maintains positive relationships with mechanics, internal customers, and vendors
- Assists in sourcing parts efficiently and cost-effectively
- Coordinates installation and troubleshoots any problems with telematics devices
- Performs periodic machine inspections and supports the Shop Manager in evaluating fleet condition and replacement planning
- Monitors shop condition, including cleanliness, safety, and the condition of the shop equipment
- Maintains appropriate discretion regarding sensitive company information
- Tracks warranties and manages associated paperwork
- Implements, maintains, and trains operators on operator care standards
- Participates in equipment demonstrations and assists with field follow-ups on new purchases
- Continuously pursues technical training and professional development
- Ensures compliance with all federal and state regulations (e.g., Annual Federal DOT inspections, OSHA, Hazardous Material Disposal, MSDS)
- Assumes the responsibilities of the Shop Manager during his / her absence

Minimum of 15 years' experience in equipment / shop managementExperience working for an equipment dealership or OEM.High School Diploma or GED is requiredCollege or technical certification is preferredKnowledge and understanding of operation of various types of heavy mobile equipmentPrevious experience in managing multiple mechanicsFamiliar with rules and regulations of associated unions preferredAny equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this job may be considered.

Lifting / Carrying : Frequently lifts and / or carries up to 50 lbs.Pushing / Pulling : Frequently pushes and / or pulls up to 50 lbs.Driving : Regular operation of company vehicles and / or equipment as needed.Movement Requirements : Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, balancing, climbing, and reaching above shoulder level; occasional sitting and twisting as required.Use of Hands : Frequent use of hands for handling tools, materials, and equipment.Working Environment
Individual will be working in a shop and field environment, including outdoor weather conditions such as extreme heat or cold, rain, snow, dust, wet surfaces, uneven terrain, and standing on concrete, occasional work in confined or elevated spaces.Individual will be working with internal customers (Foremen, Superintendents, Project Managers, QC / QA Asphalt Lab, Safety, HR, Accounting, and other Support Departments)Individual will work at varying production paces dependent on equipment repairs and maintenance demandsSupervisory Responsibilities
