School Crossing Guard
The purpose of this position is to participate in the traffic control and pedestrian school traffic direction in and around schools. Job duties consist of related traffic control duties. Successful performance in this position contributes to the safety of pedestrian and motor vehicle traffic. FLSA status is Non-Exempt.
The following duties are normal for this classification. Specific duties listed may not be required for all positions in this classification, but are determined by the normal requirements for this particular position.
CROSSING ASSISTANCE (85%) Reports reckless drivers and traffic violators. Stops traffic as needed to allow children to cross the streets. Controls vehicle and school bus traffic around school zones. Signals to children when crossing the street is safe; observes children for safe and proper crossing. May change locations as traffic demands necessitate in order to remain in the vicinity of the greatest danger to children. May assist in traffic control and parking on school campuses.
PUBLIC RELATIONS AND RELATED DUTIES (15%) Works to establish a positive relationship with children and parents. Testifies in court as necessary, relating to traffic violations. Participates in safety and educational classes. Performs other related duties as requested.
Must be nineteen (19) years of age or older. Must be able to work all designated times. Must possess and maintain a valid drivers license.

Job duties require the use of protective clothing such as reflective vests and gloves, etc. Job duties require the ability to deal with and relate to people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Job duties require the ability to talk, express, or exchange ideas by means of spoken words and / or hear and perceive the nature of sounds by ear. Job duties require the use of both hands and arms. Job candidates must be able to adapt to and perform under moderate stress. Job duties require regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.

Must provide proof of your legal right to work in the United States. Must live within a 30-mile radius of the Police Department Administrative Office. Willing to work the required hours. Must be physically able to perform the duties of a school crossing guard. Must be able to direct traffic with hand and arm motions. Must be able to stand for periods of time in intersections during all types of weather. Must submit to drug screenings for this safety sensitive position. Must accomplish the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations, in a timely manner.
