Job Summary

In this role, you will have the opportunity to :

  • Design mechanical systems supporting new nuclear power plant designs or modifications to operating nuclear power plants.
  • Work collaboratively with various design engineering execution teams across the US.
  • Perform all aspects of mechanical system design engineering and analysis for assigned systems of responsibility.
  • Function in a responsible engineer capacity which includes :
  • Actively seek to understand client interests and drivers through normal client contact and through interaction and communication with project leadership.
  • Provide technical direction and guidance to others.
  • Assign tasks to and coordinate with other internal / external team members on complex projects.
  • Perform complex research and develop recommendations for equipment and / or materials selection.
  • Understand, manage, and adhere to project budget, schedule, and quality requirements.
  • Initiate contact with other disciplines as needed to ensure proper workflow sequence.

The Team

The Mechanical Engineering Department is a global team that delivers high quality, on-time design and services projects in Power, Gas, Fuels & Chemicals, Water and Waste Water, Data Centers, and Mining. This includes everything mechanically related to Process and Power projects (from Conventional, Combined Heat and Power, Hydro, Hydrogen, Nuclear, Solar / Renewable, LNG, Ammonia, Fertilizer) to specialized Air Quality Control, HVAC, Fire Protection, Piping, Thermal and Renewable performance estimating and testing.

Black & Veatch's Power Providers focuses on the holistic demands for energy generation markets, including utilities, independent power producers, and new entrants, with the aim of delivering secure, clean power.

Preferred Qualifications

Desired experience for this position includes expertise in the following areas :

  • Nuclear Power Plant System design
  • Condensate and Feedwater systems
  • Cooling water, including closed cycle systems
  • High Pressure / Intermediate Pressure / Low / Auxiliary Steam systems
  • Instrument and / or Service Air Systems
  • Demineralized (DM) water supply and make up systems
  • Service and Potable water supply system
  • P&ID development
  • Performing calculations such as pipe sizing calculations, pipe thickness calculations, pump sizing calculation, control valve sizing calculations, heat exchanger sizing, atm. tank sizing etc.
  • Preparation of technical specifications for mechanical equipment, piping, and valves
  • Working knowledge of codes, standards, and regulations related to nuclear power plants
  • Written technical communications
  • Intermediate knowledge of engineering design principles and applicable codes, standards, and regulations related to mechanical engineering design of nuclear power plants
  • Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited program or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 5 years related work experience
  • Holds an active engineering registration or licensure to support engineer of record (EOR) requirements for BV projects in applicable countries, and supports where necessary
  • Certifications

    Work Environment and Schedule

  • This position would require working in a typical office environment. The role may entail prolonged periods of sitting and computer use; site visits may involve crouching, grasping, and standing / walking for extended periods.
  • Hybrid or flexible work options may be offered after the first 90 days of employment based on manager discretion, job performance and work assignments.
