Overview

Freelance Finance Reporter. Observer is looking for an experienced freelance reporter to cover economic policy, banking news and major tech stocks. We’re seeking someone who not only understands the financial world but also cares about how it affects people’s lives. You should be as curious about interest rates and earnings reports as you are about how those changes play out in jobs, prices and daily realities.

Responsibilities

  • Cover economic policy, banking news and major tech stocks
  • Connect the dots between market moves and real-world impacts on jobs, prices and daily life
  • Report with a proactive, strategic approach; chase ambitious stories
  • Attend and report from relevant industry events
  • Work with data and create own charts or visuals when needed

Qualifications

  • At least three years of experience in business or financial journalism
  • A sharp news sense and the ability to write both quick-turn news stories and deeper enterprise features
  • The ability to attend and report from relevant industry events
  • Comfort working with data and building your own charts or visuals
  • A proactive, self-starting attitude toward pitching and developing stories
  • High editorial standards, obsessive attention to detail, and the skeptical eye of a fact-checker

    • Compensation

    Our standard rate is $200 to $300 per article for 600-800 words. Higher rates are negotiable for exclusives and features. It is limited to U.S.-based applicants.
