Position description

The Department of Statistics in the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) at the University of California, Berkeley, seeks applicants for up to three approved tenure-track positions at the Assistant Professor level.

The Department of Statistics is seeking applicants from all research areas in Statistics and Probability, with priority given to overall originality and research potential instead of focusing on particular subareas of interest. This includes research in theoretical, applied, and computational statistics; probability; interdisciplinary applications; and adjacent fields such as machine learning.

In addition to the broad areas mentioned above, one of the three positions will focus on AI, Inequality, and Society (AIIS), which is part of a cluster of faculty positions across multiple units designed to address questions related to the myriad ways in which AI may reshape individual lives, possibly exacerbating existing inequalities and creating new ones. This can include research in algorithmic fairness, AI and the economy, functioning of AI software within larger sociotechnical systems, social and behavioral impacts of AI, AI and education, generative AI and large language models. The Department of Statistics seeks applicants with novel research in statistical aspects of AI and, in particular, the responsible application of AI in societal settings.
