Process Engineer / Analyst – Generation, Renewables, & Gas (Birmingham or Atlanta)
Environmental Solutions in Technical Shared Services is seeking a Process Engineer who will provide corporate engineering support for Southern Company's power generation fleet. The role includes a mix of field and office work supporting projects in electric generating plants, including current and future water treatment, wastewater treatment, air emissions control and other chemical processes.
Location and Travel
- This position is flexible to be located in either Alabama (Birmingham) or Georgia (Atlanta).
- This position requires travel (up to 50%), including day trips, overnight travel, and some air travel.
- A mix of field and office work is required.
- Relocation assistance is available if the selected candidate currently resides outside the Birmingham or Atlanta area.
Primary Responsibilities
Provide corporate support for wastewater and ash systems across the Southern Company SystemDevelop and review design basis documentation and technical specificationsReview engineered drawings to ensure compliance with company specifications, guidelines, codes, and regulationsTroubleshoot plant processes across the fleet and analyze data for process improvementsDesign and execute pilot programs and / or testing for future plants and environmental complianceSupport research and development with pilot programsCommunicate complex topics effectively to internal and external stakeholdersCollaborate with various stakeholders across Southern CompanyPosition Qualifications
Education
Bachelor's degree requiredBS Engineering preferred (Chemical Engineering a plus)Other degrees (e.g., chemistry or biology) may be considered with relevant operations experienceExperience
At least 2 years of experience in heavy industrial processes (power generation, paper mill, petrochemical, refinery, gas operations, pipeline, etc.)Operations experience in a plant environment preferredOptimization and complex troubleshooting of mechanical and chemical processes preferredPrevious project management experience highly desiredKnowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Knowledge of fossil-fueled combustion systems and pollutant emission control systemsStrong analytical ability and problem-solving skillsAbility to manage multiple projects with varying deadlines and prioritiesStrong oral and written communication skillsStrong presentation skillsProficiency in Microsoft SharePoint, Power Automate, and PowerApps is a plusFamiliarity with process safety and inherently safe design principlesBehavioral Attributes
