Overview

Process Engineer / Analyst – Generation, Renewables, & Gas (Birmingham or Atlanta)

Environmental Solutions in Technical Shared Services is seeking a Process Engineer who will provide corporate engineering support for Southern Company's power generation fleet. The role includes a mix of field and office work supporting projects in electric generating plants, including current and future water treatment, wastewater treatment, air emissions control and other chemical processes.

Location and Travel

  • This position is flexible to be located in either Alabama (Birmingham) or Georgia (Atlanta).
  • This position requires travel (up to 50%), including day trips, overnight travel, and some air travel.
  • A mix of field and office work is required.
  • Relocation assistance is available if the selected candidate currently resides outside the Birmingham or Atlanta area.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide corporate support for wastewater and ash systems across the Southern Company System
  • Develop and review design basis documentation and technical specifications
  • Review engineered drawings to ensure compliance with company specifications, guidelines, codes, and regulations
  • Troubleshoot plant processes across the fleet and analyze data for process improvements
  • Design and execute pilot programs and / or testing for future plants and environmental compliance
  • Support research and development with pilot programs
  • Communicate complex topics effectively to internal and external stakeholders
  • Collaborate with various stakeholders across Southern Company

    • Position Qualifications

    Education

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • BS Engineering preferred (Chemical Engineering a plus)
  • Other degrees (e.g., chemistry or biology) may be considered with relevant operations experience

    • Experience

  • At least 2 years of experience in heavy industrial processes (power generation, paper mill, petrochemical, refinery, gas operations, pipeline, etc.)
  • Operations experience in a plant environment preferred
  • Optimization and complex troubleshooting of mechanical and chemical processes preferred
  • Previous project management experience highly desired

    • Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of fossil-fueled combustion systems and pollutant emission control systems
  • Strong analytical ability and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with varying deadlines and priorities
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft SharePoint, Power Automate, and PowerApps is a plus
  • Familiarity with process safety and inherently safe design principles
