JOB TITLE : Director of Veterinary Medicine
LOCATION : Rochester, MN

POSITION SUMMARY
The Director of Veterinary Medicine will be responsible for maintaining and monitoring an adequate program of veterinary care in compliance with the requirements and expectations of USDA, AAALAC, FDA, NIH and other relevant agencies. Adequate veterinary care consists of programs for preventative medicine; surveillance, diagnosis, treatment, and control of disease, including zoonosis control; management of protocol-associated disease, disability, or other sequelae; anesthesia and analgesia; surgery and postsurgical care; assessment of animal well-being and euthanasia. As a part of the leadership team, this position will be expected to continually develop leadership, scientific and regulatory excellence and provide insight into company activities and strategic planning.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Serves as the attending veterinarian and a voting member of the IACUC
- Directs and / or performs medical treatments
- Oversees veterinary review of Animal Care and Use Protocols
- Provides formal and informal training and consultation
- Assists in training areas regarding animal care and welfare
- Advises the Investigators and IACUC on the appropriateness of specific techniques and methods in animals and recommend alternatives
- Provides guidance and oversight on experimental surgery process
- Performs surgical and / or interventional procedures as needed
- Provides diagnostic necropsy service
- Drafts and revises site guidelines and SOPs
- Ensures that all programs relating to animal housing, health monitoring and preventative medicine are complied with according to guidelines, SOPs and industry standards
- Develops new and improved techniques for care of animals
- Reviews study protocols with a focus on scientific and animal care content
- Performs as a Study Director as needed
- Assist in facility design and planning
- Assist in herd planning
- Perform other duties as assigned

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
DVM or VMD requiredFamiliarity with swine health and care preferredSurgical training in large animals preferredTechnical Competencies :
Knowledgeable about the conduct of research involving animalsFamiliarity with USDA AWA regulations and the Guide for Care and Use of Laboratory Animals preferred, experience working with FDA CVM preferredExperience achieving and maintaining AAALAC accreditation preferredPerformance in a high health environment preferredProficient in Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPointDESIRED KEY COMPETENCIES
